  2. Video Technology Today • The world is moving to High Definition • Premium HD content will not be available over analog outputs • Professional systems will need to handle encrypted content • HDMI is the medium of choice • DisplayPort is quickly gaining momentum

  3. What is Driving the Future of AV? • CONTENT – Where does it come from? • User computers • Video playback devices • Cable feed • Blu-ray and DVD disc players • Video Teleconferencing CODECs • Cameras

  4. Computer Evolution • PC Manufacturers (and Apple) want two things: • Lower cost • Small form factor • RGBHV is expensive and big • Manufacturers are moving towards DisplayPort / Mini DisplayPort

  5. Video Playback Device Evolution • Content providers want one thing: control over their content (DRM, DRM, DRM…) • HDCP is the industry standard • HDCP requires a digital video format (i.e. HDMI)

  6. Say “Goodbye” to analog • Content providers have embraced HDCP and manufacturers have embraced DisplayPort and HDMI • Content provider support and set-top boxes • SkyHD, a popular European satellite service, is already shipping HDMI-only set-top boxes • MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is petitioning the FCC to block movies from being transmitted via analog outputs • Feature support • 1080p and Deep Color are only supported by HDMI formats

  7. Apple MacBook

  8. HDCP • The role of HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) is to prevent interception and copying or other unauthorized use of this bitstream The content protection chain

  9. How is Digital Video Different from Analog? • Its just bits! • Easier format conversion • Pick the format that best supports your application What are the pro/cons of each format?

  10. HDMI / DVI / DisplayPort HDMI Video 7.1 audio HDCP EDID CEC DisplayPort Video 7.1 audio HDCP EDID ------ DVI Video ------ HDCP * EDID • ------ * Optional and not supported on most DVI extenders

  11. Top 10 Professional System Challenges • Cable installation (infrastructure) • Seamless support for analog and digital • HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) • Slow switching • Managing resolution and format (EDID) • Managing audio • Managing consumer electronics control (CEC) • Distance limitation • Expandability • Testing and troubleshooting

  12. HDMI Distance and Cable Limitations • HDMI signals degrade quickly - distance limitations become an issue • HDMI connectors can’t be easily field terminated • Difficult to run through walls
