What does it mean that India was the “Jewel in the Crown” of the British Empire? • It was one of Britain’s “most prized possessions.” • It brought Great Britain “vast wealth.” • Why did the British think that they could not afford to show weakness in India? • They were “vastly outnumbered” by the Indians.

How did the British discriminate against the Indians?   • India not represented in British govt. • No Indians in civil service. • No meaningful role in running the govt. • British always served first. • No Indians in first-class seats. • Socialization & marriage was looked down upon. • Segregation in public and in army. • What were the attitudes of the British towards the Indians? • Believed their civilization, technology, etc. benefitted the Indians. • Indians should appreciate British rule. • British thought they were superior because they came from Greek/Roman civilizations & practiced Christianity. • More courageous & intelligent.

  5. Write the dates: The British colonized India in 1757 and stayed in power until 1947, when Mahatma Gandhi led India’s movement for independence. Today we are going to look at photographs and quotations from the time of British colonialism in order to analyze how the British treated Indians during their colonization.
