  4. Learn & Earn: Early and Middle College High Schools (based on college campuses) Early College: Small, autonomous schools where students earn an associate degreeor two years of college credit. Middle College: College courses are offered without the guarantee of a two-year degree or two years of transferable credit. Learn & Earn: Early and Middle College High Schools (based on college campuses) Both Early and Middle College High Schools: • Integrate high school, college experience • Improve college-going rate, preparedness • Offer Small schools, dual enrollment Early College High School offers: • Accelerated academic experience • Graduation with diploma and an Associate’s Degree or two years credit toward a Bachelor’s degree Learn & Earn: Rigor, Relevance and Relationships North Carolina Community College SystemH. Learn & Earn:Start-up • Established by Governor Mike Easley • 2003 General Assembly enacted G.S. 116C-4: First in America Innovative Education Initiatives Act and placed responsibility with the Education Cabinet • Collaboration with local districts, higher education, and business • 2004 General Assembly included $2.2 million in recurring and non-recurring funds ($265, 820 recurring in 2004-05 allocated to 5 participating colleges to administer the program) • Gates Foundation provided an $11 million initial grant and will provide an additional $9 million Learn & Earn: Rigor, Relevance and Relationships North Carolina Community College SystemH. Learn & Earn: North Carolina’s Education Funnel • In North Carolina, for every 100 students in the 9th grade: • 60graduate from high school four years later • 41 of those 60 enter college right away • 29 of those 41 are still enrolled in college in their second year • 19of the original 100 graduate with associate/bachelor degrees within six years Learn & Earn: Rigor, Relevance and Relationships North Carolina Community College SystemH.
