  1. The Use and Abuse of Water

  2. Uses of water! There are five different names for the uses of water. Agricultural, Industrial, Household, Recreational Environmental. 97% of the earth’s water is salt water and 3% is fresh water. (mostly from ice) People use water as a necessity for drinking. The total amount of water in the body is approximately 60 % In a newbornbaby, this may be as high as 75 % FACT: Without water we would all die.

  3. Uses Of Water • Humans need water to live, our body contains around 60% of water. We drink water, bath/shower in water, brush our teeth, wash clothes and pots with water do sports in water like sailing. We cook and clean in water. Water is used in industry as a coolant. Ice is used in hospitals to keep organs alive. • Without water any living thing, plants and animals, wouldn't survive.

  4. Water uses in the U.K. Sewage treatment works are designed to remove chemicals and bacteria that could harm the environment, so that the water can be returned to a river or the sea. At all points along the way the water is continuously tested and monitored to ensure the right amount of chemicals are being added and that it is clean enough to be returned to the environment. The River Tees North East Sewage Works

  5. The Uses Of Water! Kielder Reservoir Constructed - 1975-1981 Length – 26 miles perimetre Area - 10 sq kilometres. Capacity - 200 million cubic metres. Cost - £167m. Position: 1m east of Kielder or 1m west of Falstone, Northumberland. Grid Ref: NY 706 871 (dam at east end of reservoir). 200 billion litres of water. The reservoir is the biggest man-made reservoir in Europe and was constructed between 1975 and 1981 and opened in 1982 by the Queen Of England. This period includes the 2 years it took the valley to flood after construction was finished. It was designed for Northumbria Water by Sir Frederick Gibberd. The reservoir's main use is to provide giving more water into the North Tyne to support abstractions of water further downstream. It also underpins the Kielder Transfer Scheme, whereby water can be transferred to the Wear and the Tees, to meet shortfalls in those areas.

  6. The Abuse Of Water! We now have evidence that water is a health drink of real power. Yet Water is still taken for granted in the UK. People don’t notice how much water they’re wasting by doing the slightest things, for example, leaving your tap running whilst brushing your teeth uses nearly 6 litres of water, a minute. People should take a shower instead of a bath. The average person in the UK uses 150 litres of water a day. This takes into account cooking, cleaning, washing and flushing the toilet.

  7. Abuse Of WaterBottled WaterBottled water corporations market their product as a healthy choice, but research shows that the product is no safer than our public tap water systems, costs thousands of times more, and is wasting our water supply. Ecologically, bottled water is a massive problem, it takes over 15 million barrels of oil (enough for 1 million cars for a year) to make plastic water bottles.

  8. Water abuses in the U.K We all have bad habits when it comes to using water, but by making small changes you can make a big difference and reduce the amount of water you use and the energy used to supply and treat wastewater which is returned to the environment. Water efficiency is about reducing waste and thinking about the water and energy you use.  This will encourage you and your family to form good habits.

  9. Abuse of water in the UK Less than 0.02% of the water on the Earth’s surface is liquid, freshwater in rivers, lakes and wetlands. The management of this limited amount of water is becoming increasingly important. Fresh water is important to all life on Earth, including sustaining human populations and meeting development goals. As human populations have grown and consumption of water increased, our activities have taken an enormous toll on global freshwater resources. Not only are we over-consuming a very valuable and limited supply, we are abusing it.

  10. Abuse of water When people throw rubbish into a river or sea they don’t realise the damage they are causing to water. There are also companies that are allowing chemicals to flow into water which causes the water to become unusable. When you take a shower you are using less water than If you have a bath and is probably more hygenic. Another way people abuse water is leaving the tap running when they are brushing their teeth, it would waste much less water if they turned the tap off in between brushing. Water is slowly slipping away thanks to all the wasting that we do. Water is precious. We should take care as it may not always be there!

  11. This year in the UK, already there are reports of there being a water shortage as there has not been enough rain over the winter. • There is already a hose-pipe ban in some parts of the country. • At the moment, as we live in the North East of England, our water supply is not effected. Kielder Reservoir is the largest manmade water storage in Europe.
