  3. “When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,…” • Meaning • Transition into death • Winter symbolizes death because it ends life. • For example: plants, trees, etc.

  4. “As after sunset fadeth in the west,Which by and by black night doth take away,” • Allusion to the west symbolizes death • West was considered the unknown • When the sun sets, it symbolizes the end. • Night also symbolizes death.

  5. “This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,To love that well which thou must leave ere long.” • Message of line: • Cherish love because life will end one day. • As the amount of time for living decreases, the amount of love will increase.

  6. Death Sonnet ? • Sonnets are usually written about romance and love • Ironically, this sonnet talks about death for the most part. • In the last two couplets, Shakespeare speaks of love.

  7. The Dark Lady • In Shakespeare’s previous sonnets, he speaks about a dark woman he loves. • Sonnet 73 addresses to her • Speaks about how life will end one day, and he will love her more as each day passes.
