Summary • GABA is expressed in carotid body chemoreceptor type 1 cells. • GABA released from the CB during hypoxia, inhibits sensory discharge postsynaptically via a shunting mechanism involving GABAa receptors. • GABAb receptor-mediated activation of TASK-1 or related channel provides a presynapticautoregulatory feedback mechanism that modulates fast synaptic transmission in rat carotid body.
