  29. Conflict Resolution As a Christ-centered community of learners, we are committed to handling concerns, complaints, and conflicts biblically (see Matthew 5:21-24 and 18:15-17). In doing this, we will be affording ourselves the opportunity to allow God to work to resolve the concern and to help us overcome the awkwardness and fear in the resolution of differences.

  30. The Problem • We profess to believe God’s Word as our standard for life, yet we address problems and resolve conflicts as if we belonged to the world. • We either don’t understand or we ignore what the Bible says about conflict resolution.

  31. The Problem “I have learned that God’s people act ungodly at times.” David Nichols, outgoing chairman of Delaware County Christian School.

  32. The Consequences • Unresolved conflict creates disharmony among believers and contributes to disunity in the community. • Disunity harms our witness to the world and fails to give glory to God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

  33. The 4 G’s of Peacemaking • Glorify God: How can I please and honor God in this situation? • Get the log out your own eye: How can I show Jesus’ work in me by taking responsibility for my contribution to this conflict? • Gently restore: How can I lovingly serve others by helping them take responsibility for their contribution to this conflict? • Go and be reconciled: How can I demonstrate the forgiveness of God and encourage a reasonable solution to this conflict? --Ken Sande, The Peacemaker

  34. The Application of Matthew 18 Scenario #1:  Your child reports that her teacher is mean or doesn't like her and picks on her in class. • Matthew 18 dishonored:  You begin to call other parents in the class to find it if their children are unhappy with the teacher. • Matthew 18 honored:  You call or make an appointment with the teacher to share what your child told you, and together you explore reasons why she might be feeling this way.

  35. Matthew 18 Applied Scenario #2:  Your child reports that he is being bullied on the playground during recess. • Matthew 18 dishonored:  You send an email to the principal demanding that she expel the alleged bully. • Matthew 18 honored:  You call or make an appointment with the teacher to alert her as to what is happening and, together, discuss the appropriate plan of action to address the situation.

  36. Matthew 18 Applied Scenario #3:  You do not believe that your son is getting enough playing time during basketball games. • Matthew 18 dishonored:  You begin to ask other parents in the stands if they think the coach is playing the right players and substituting correctly.   • Matthew 18 honored:  You encourage your son to visit with the coach and ask him what he can do to increase his playing time.
