Introduction • In Jesus’ Sermon on The Mount, He warned against shallow outward righteousness • He also warned against hypocrisy, acting righteous for approval of men • Then, He warns of deceptive false prophets who will lead us to destruction • Finally, He warns of deceiving ourselves into thinking we are doing God’s will when we are not

Warning Against Shallow Righteousness and Hypocrisy • Mat 5:20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. • Mat 5:21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'

  4. Warning Against Shallow Righteousness and Hypocrisy • Mat 5:22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

  5. Warning Against Shallow Righteousness and Hypocrisy • Mat 6:1 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

Warning Against Destructive Way and Deceptive Prophets • Mat 7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. • Mat 7:14 "For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Warning Against Destructive Way and Deceptive Prophets • Mat 7:15 "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. • Mat 7:16 "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? • Mat 7:17 "So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.

Warning Against Self Deception • Mat 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. • Mat 7:22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'

  9. Warning Against Self Deception • Mat 7:23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

  10. Warning Against Self Deception • Professed disciples are deceived • These disciples are zealous, diligent and partially obedient • Surprised at Judgment day • The Lord requires complete loving obedience to Him • Why does this self deceit happen? • How can we prevent deceiving ourselves?

We Justify Disobedience By Using Wrong Standard of Behavior • Luk 16:14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him. • Luk 16:15 And He said to them, "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.

  12. We Justify Disobedience By Using Wrong Standard of Behavior • Joh 5:44 "How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

  13. We Justify Disobedience By Using Wrong Standard of Behavior • 2Co 10:12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.

We Fail To Apply The Right Standard of Scriptures To Ourselves • Jas 1:21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. • Jas 1:22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. • Jas 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;

We Fail To Apply The Right Standard of Scriptures To Ourselves • Jas 1:24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. • Jas 1:25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

We Fail To Apply The Right Standard of Scriptures To Ourselves • Jas 1:26 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. • Jas 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

  17. We Fail To Apply The Right Standard of Scriptures To Ourselves • 1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

We Fail To Apply The Right Standard of Scriptures To Ourselves • 2Th 2:10 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. • 2Th 2:11 For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, • 2Th 2:12 in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.

  19. Humbly and Honestly Search The Scriptures • Luk 8:11 "Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. • Luk 8:15 "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.

Humbly and Honestly Search The Scriptures • Act 17:10 The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. • Act 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Humbly and Honestly Search The Scriptures • 1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. • 1Jn 4:2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;

  25. Humbly and Honestly Search The Scriptures • 1Jn 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.

  26. Humbly and Honestly Search The Scriptures • 2Th 2:15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.

  27. Examine Ourselves To See If We Are Applying Scriptures • 2Co 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test?

Examine Ourselves To See If We Are Applying Scriptures • Mat 7:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. • Mat 7:25 "And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.

Examine Ourselves To See If We Are Applying Scriptures • Mat 7:26 "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. • Mat 7:27 "The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell--and great was its fall."
