  2. Nixon and His “Enemies” • He viewed protestors of the Vietnam War as enemies • He developed an “enemies list” of people he considered a threat to his presidency

  3. Mounting a Re-election Fight • Nixon realized he only won his first term by a slim margin • Support was high, but the Vietnam War was still going on • He looked to gain every advantage possible

  4. Mounting a Re-election Fight • On June 17, 1972, five Nixon supporters broke into the Democratic Party’s headquarters looking for information • They were discovered by a security guard and arrested

  5. The Cover-Up Begins • Members of the administration destroyed documents and gave false testimonies • Though Nixon did not order the break-in, he did order the cover-up

  6. The Cover-Up Begins • Administration members urged the CIA and FBI to stop asking questions, as the investigation “threatened national security” • Most American’s believed Nixon’s denial and he easily won re-election in 1972.

  7. The Cover-Up Unravels • The Watergate burglars went on trial in 1973 • One of them, James McCord, agreed to cooperate with the investigation • Many confessions followed his testimony

  8. The Cover-Up Unravels • John Dean, counsel to the president, declared the Attorney General had ordered the break-in and that Nixon had played an active role in covering it up

  9. The Case of the Tapes • Tapes were discovered from within the White House, but the president claimed executive privilege in order to keep them private. • Keeping White House conversations private to protect national security

  10. The Case of the Tapes • In the Fall of 1973, VP Spiro Agnew was forced to resign after accepting bribes • Gerald Ford, Republican leader of the House of Representatives, became the new VP

  11. The Case of the Tapes • A few days later, the House Judiciary Committee voted to impeachNixon • Officially charge him with presidential misconductand obstruction of justice

  13. The Impact of Watergate • After the crisis, Congress passed many laws to limit executive power and get greater balance of power in the government • Watergate made many Americans distrust their public officials.
