What is the Watergate scandal? • The Watergate scandal was a scandal in the 1970’s involving former president Richard Nixon. The scandal became present after the break-in of the Watergate office building. The scandal was all about
Why is this important? • We need to know that people will do whatever it takes to win, including the president of the United States.
How can I find out even more? • Go to www.nixonlibrary.gov and go to virtual library, and then White House Tapes. There, you can find many tapes of Richard Nixon speaking to his fellow conspirators before and after the scandal broke lose into the public.
Which tapes would you like me to check out? • There are 3 very interesting tapes which contain good material. All of the ones I will list come under the sample conversations April 1971-May1972. The three are 534-2(3), 541-2, and 587-7. The most important in my mind out of those is 534-2(3) because he is asking for someone to break into some safes and destroy some secret files inside of it. That shows that Richard Nixon could not be trusted because those documents could have been documents to help him win a reelection.
Opinion • In my opinion, Richard Nixon is a lieing president because why else would he resign if he wasn’t at fault. I also think it was crazy the his vice president, Gerald Ford, gave him a pardon so he was waved of all of his crimes against him.
Conclusion • We all need to think about who we can trust. If they have been trustworthy in the past, then you know you can trust them in the future. But if the person with the most authority in the country lies, then who can you trust then? Richard could have spread lies, which people thought were true since it came from him. Lying means chaos, which means a lot of conflict.
