  1. Louis Theroux:The Most Hated Family in America Documentary Analysis

  2. Type of Documentary • This documentary is about the journalist Louis Theroux meeting ‘America’s most hated family’, the Phelps family. This family protest against an America that tolerates homosexuality. The documentary is directed by Geoffrey O'Connor. • This documentary includes a linear narrative structure which is also multi-stranded. The type of this documentary is factual.

  3. Camerawork The camerawork used throughout the documentary is useful as they are used for a purpose and are effective. Here are a few examples: Two Shot: • This shot is used to show the relationship between the Journalist (Louis Theroux) and whoever he is interviewing. Often there is a moral contrast as throughout the documentary it is between different opinions involving religion and other views.

  4. Camerawork Establishing Shots: • This is to show a new location, it shows where it is set. Also, shows the area and what the mise-en-scene will consist of. For example: they travel to Missouri to protest, a long establishing shot of where they are located is used. Close-ups: • Shows the journalist (Theroux) addressing the camera and in conversation with the others. Useful because it shows his emotion and what his current attitudes are towards the church and the people apart of it.

  5. Mise-en-scene • Westboro Baptist Church • Missouri • The Church – The head of it sits at the front ‘Gramp’, signs, familied • Protests – Picket signs, ‘God hates Fags’, they chant songs • Topeka • ‘Christians’ - Wear clothes with offensive messages on them • Phelps family

  6. Sound Non-Diegetic: • Background Music • Theme Music, Documentary Score – made specifically for this documentary • Voice Over & Narrations Diegetic Sound: • Theroux addresses the camera, talks during interviews and when he’s in conversation

  7. Editing Cuts & Transitions: • This documentary uses cuts and transitions which are relevant to what they’re talking about. This is useful because if they speak about protests or funerals it will show relevant content in the next cut. Fades: • At the end of the documentary it fades to black to declare that the documentary is over and then flows next showing the credits.

  8. Archive Material Relevant images used: • Signs, pickets, protests. News Broadcast: • Showing background information that is relevant to the documentary.

  9. Graphics The introduction: • Shows the title of the documentary which is text. It is also written boldly and highlights what the documentary is about within the title sequence Credits: • Shows who was involved, credited and what roles those people completed.
