  5. The NB/PEI Educational Computer Network (ECN), founded in 1970, connects all the of universities in the eastern Canadian provinces of New Brunswick (NB) and Prince Edward Island (PEI).

  6. The Canadian Internet Timeline "1970 October New Brunswick Educational Computer Network is formed, and later renamed the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Educational Network. It is still operating." This quote is the very first entry in printed in the "Canadian Internet Handbook", 1995 edition, by Jim Carroll and Rick Broadhead, published by Prentice Hall Canada.

  17. NB/PEI Research Grid • The NB/PEI Research Grid is a cooperative effort to provide a highly reliable research network backbone to Atlantic Canada, and to significantly upgrade and expand the capacity for regional research and education in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. • The initiative is in direct response to the need institutions of higher education, research facilities and private companies in the region have to increase bandwidth so they can collaborate, and participate in research and innovation projects regionally, nationally and globally. • ECN: 3 x 1Gb rings for a little more than the price of the existing, overloaded 30Mb network. • 1,000,000 x faster than the original 1970 network.
