You have recently been advised of the transfer of the SQF Program from the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia to the Food Marketing Institute (FMI). FMI is pleased that the deliberation between the Department and FMI has been completed. We appreciate your patience during this time and look forward to your continued involvement with SQF. Now that FMI has formally taken ownership of the SQF Program it is appropriate that we outline how the SQF program will be administered under FMI. First it must be emphasized that those suppliers whose systems are currently SQF certified will remain valid. FMI will continue to support certified business and make improvements to the SQF Program to make it more flexible and acceptable to the global market. We also advise that Curtin Consulting Services has been appointed the FMI Regional representative in Australia until January 2003 after which more permanent arrangements will be put in place. The role of the Regional Representatives is to represent the FMI in regard to SQF matters in Australia, develop and expand the growth of SQF in Australia, provide information about the SQF program and support SQF licensees and certified businesses. 36. Lets take a deeper look into the program and envision the program as a tree. Its framework of support, the trunk if you will is composed of the guiding principles of the HACCP Method which rests and depends upon its roots (Pre-requisite programs such as Good agricultural and manufacturing practices. The leaves provide protection an assurance, they are the individual elements of the applicable Code. These elements are what the Supplier meets. The program does not dictate processes, in other words, it will not tell an apple farmer how to grow apples nor a chicken farmer how to raise his flock. The program is a comprehensive Food Safety and Quality management system that allows a business to meet its commitments while streamlining their process.
