  1. REVIEW OF LAST LESSON: • In 1588 who was the ruler of England? • Elizabeth I • In 1588 who was the ruler of Spain? • King Phillip • In 1588 who was the ruler of Ireland? • Hugh O’Neill • What was the battle between England and Spain called? • The Armada • How were Ireland and Spain connected? • O’Neill asked Phillip for help against Elizabeth. • What controls did Elizabeth put on the Ulster clans? • More English soldiers, divided the province into counties, ordered O’Neill to make his people follow English laws and customs, appointed an English official to ensure this was carried out.

  2. THE NINE YEARS WAR • The Ulster lords united under Hugh O’Neill because they feared that Elizabeth wanted to take away their power. O’Neill knew that they could not defeat the English on their own so asked for help from the Catholic King Philip of Spain. The Spanish arrived too late and in the wrong place (Kinsale in Cork). O’Neill was defeated in the Battle of Kinsale 1601 and eventually surrendered in 1603 when he signed the Treaty of Mellifont. This agreed that the chiefs had to do what they were told, give up Irish laws and customs and allow Protestant preachers into Ulster.

  3. To examine the role of Sir Arthur Chichester. THE PLANTATIONS

  4. WHO WAS ARTHUR CHICHESTER? • Arthur Chichester was an English soldier who fought against O’Neill. He was rewarded with land in Antrim. He persuaded many English planters to come to Ireland and rent his land, making him rich. They established the city of Belfast.

  5. MONTGOMERY & HAMILTON • At the same time Montgomery and Hamilton (two Scotsmen) got land in Down and Antrim. They settled Scottish planters on their land. This introduced Presbyterians to Ireland. They built towns and villages, such as Bangor.

  6. THE FLIGHT OF THE EARLS • Following the death of Q________________ in 1603, her cousin King J____ of Scotland became king of England. At first, he allowed O’Neill and the other U_____ lords keep their land. In 1605, King J____ made C_________ his deputy in Ireland, allowing his to rule the country.
