  2. Awareness • The nature of stress. • Stress occurs when the body responds to changes in the external or internal environment when these changes are seen as a demand. • Learn about your own stress response • What specific stress situations cause You to feel stressed?

  3. Balance • The stressor - working on the stress causing situation (change the environment or modify your own behaviour) • The body's reaction - releasing build up of tension • Vigorous activity • constructive activity after a crisis • Break from stress causing situation • Provide goals and raise self esteem • Relaxation • Emotional release- talking it out, laughing, crying, giving vent to anger

  4. Balance Cont. • Perception of stress - taking steps to see things differently. • People who do not fall sick under stress:- react to change as a challenge • Commit themselves and become very involved with dealing with the situation • feel they have some degree of control over the situation rather than feeling helpless.

  5. Balance • How to see things differently: • Challenge • Choice • Self talk • Mental sign • Style of living • Breaking stressful habits • Shrinking your worries • Good balanced diet • Avoid caffeine which can provoke some stress response • Avoid eating on the run

  6. Control • The aim is not to control the original situation • More often control develops with the use of relaxation techniques, exercise and attaining positive attitudes • The feeling of self direction and self responsibility can enhance self-image and lead to a greater chance of controlling the situation.
