  1. Video-based m-learning as a potential for inclusive and lifelong learning Lisa Gjedde Ass. Professor, Ph.d. Dept. for Curriculum Research Danish University of Education

  2. The FlexLearn project: Mobile learning for truckdrivers (Video clips from the presentation missing due to size.)

  3. Flex-learn partners • VisioGuide • Innovisio • Mobile People • The Danish University of Education • Funded by the Danish Ministry of Science

  4. Learningplatform dual 3G mobile/PC LMS system gives an overview of mobile and PC activity Video-learning with mobile video-coach Remediation of content Certification Attitudes/tools Exploring new potentials for learning The Flex-learn project goals

  5. Mobile Video-based learning • Experiential learning • Cases and examples • Contextual use • Reflection independent problemsolving

  6. Multimodal learning experiences • Combining modalties • Sound • Images • Textual overlays • Multiple choice questions

  7. Tools • Tools for calculations • Handbooks • Immediate and contextual access to tools and ressources

  8. Research metods • 3 pilotcourses with 8 learners ( mostly dyslexic and non-native) – observations and qualitative interviews • Testing it on the road with 4 truckdrivers – videointerviews on mobile phones • Datalogging of users – triangulation with interviews • Qualitative interviews with drivers, teachers and officeworkers • Iterative designprocess

  9. Challenging the learner • The users non-media literacy and unfamiliarity with technology • The systems lack of adaptivity • Re-meditation issues: lack of redundancy • Need of different presentation of learning materials in terms of genre • Need for a teachers personal presence and support

  10. Motivating the learner • Video-based learning • Mobile technology • Multiple choice with direct feed-back • Self-directed repetition • self-paced progression • Easy access to tools

  11. The role of video in the learning • Some learners expressed that the coach/ instructor felt like he was present • The video was combined with multiple choice question to alert the learners and avoid passive cognitive processes

  12. A different arena for learning • The learner in (partial) control • Can return to lessons that are relevant to their task at hand • Experiences of succes and accomplishment • Workplace and lifelong learning

  13. Enabling video-based learning • The ressource uses text-based multiple-choice tests after each lesson and to evaluate completed sections of the course. • It has implications for the learners focus on the material • Involvement and motivation • Game • Complementary use with other types of questions which further independent thinking and construction of knowledge • Multiple-choice tests based on images and audio

  14. M-learning perspectives / affordances • Personal • Portable • Learning technology independent of time/space • Repeating sessions • Contextualized on-demand learning • Differentiation

  15. M-learning perspectives 2 • Visual and auditive • Easily accessible • Supports a non-literary access to learning • Contextual and situated • Blended learning • Support deeper learning/ competencies

  16. Exploring potentials for inclusive and lifelong M-learning • How can inclusivity be supported, enabling different cognitive approaches and learning styles through mediation, remediation, mobile video ? • How may a video-based interactive learning environment support an active construction of knowledge ? • Developing competencies through different contextual tasks?
