Galatians and Philippians • Galatians 1:11-17 • Defense of Paul’s Apostleship. • His claim to have received the Gospel from God • I Cor 15:3-11– how do we resolve this dilemma? • What is the value of this section? • How do we give our own testimony? • Verse 15-16. What do we learn? • Paul was probably late 30s when he converted. • He sees his whole life as part of the sovereign plan of God

Galatians and Philippians • Philippians 1:11-17 • Notice the difference in tone from Galatians. • There is no question of the power of the Gospel for the Philippians. • These verses lay out Paul’s Heart– that the Gospel be preached • Do we have that desire? • Do we seek in all things to Preach Christ? • The imprisonment took Paul out of the missions game, but put others in.

Galatians and Philippians • Philippians 1:19-23 • The Church in Philippi had sent relief to Paul • Paul was thanking them for their support. • Thank you notes have kind of gone out of fashion. • Perhaps we should make stronger effort to send thank you notes. • Paul’s strain was such that he thought he might die. • But this was not a bad thing. • Verse 21 states what should be the Christian motto.

Galatians and Philippians • Philippians 1:23-26 • Paul is quite ill at this time. • He is hard-pressed. • If he should die, he would be with Christ. • Does he pray for Death? • If he stays, he can see the grace of the Philippian Church. • Should he pray to live? • He really does not know what he is going to pray for.

  6. Galatians and Philippians • Philippians 1:27. • Let your conduct show Christ. • Let it be worthy. The word means “of equal weight, befitting.” Of the same kind as • Let your conduct be worthy. • The King James says-- Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: • As it becomes Christ. An older idea but I think important.

Galatians and Philippians • Galatians 1:18-24 • Paul met with only two of the Apostles. • But he does note that they (the Apostles) received Paul and Barnabas in fellowship (2:9). • The point Paul is making is that his Gospel was not from the original Apostles, it was from God • But the Apostles recognized his authority. • Why does this matter to the Galatians? • Because of the errors they were allowing into the church.

Galatians and Philippians • Galatians 1:22-24 • Paul, who had attacked the Church, now serves it. • This is his testimony • And it had reached distant churches • We do not know who we influence. • I met a man who had met my friend Ric. • Who do we influence, and when? • What is our testimony for Christ?

  9. Galatians and Philippians • What do the passages have in common? • Paul testifies of his faith • Paul calls on the Church to testify • Paul expects the Church to serve • How are they different?

  10. Galatians and Philippians • Testimony Practice • Form Teams • Develop your testimony • Choose one person to give it • Philippians 1:13 • To whom has your faith become evident? • How can you make your faith evident?

Galatians and Philippians • Think of your conversion. • Were you younger or older? • Had you been a bad kid or a good kid? • Had you been trying to do right, or choosing to do wrong? • What led you to the Gospel? • What did Paul learn in the three years from his conversion to the time he met Peter? • That’s Acts 9:20-26. Three years pass in these verses.

Galatians and Philippians • Jumping ahead a little. • Paul’s conversion led him to Ananias. • Then to Barnabas. • We will notice that few friends are mentioned in Galatians. • Philippians is a different story. • Timothy, Epaphroditus, Titus • Lots of friends. • Our friends are our greatest gift in Christ
