Assessing the Carbon Cycle in South Africa: A BETHY/DLR Approach to Land Degradation

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of the carbon cycle in South Africa utilizing the BETHY/DLR model, emphasizing land degradation. We analyzed data from Envisat MERIS and GLC2000 to develop methods for land cover classification, aiming to quantify net primary production (NPP) and net ecosystem production (NEP) across diverse ecosystems like scrublands. Our approach also includes validation against satellite data and annual biomass statistics. The results highlight significant impacts on evapotranspiration and productivity metrics, contributing to a better understanding of carbon dynamics.
