Students & Technology in Academia, Research and Service (STARS) • A Southeastern Partnership for Broadening Participation in Computing $ 2 million grant – multi year project, NSF Meredith College > 50 Partners Eleven Members Student Leadership Corps (FAMU Chapter) SLC Partnerships Goals of STARS Outreach/Mentoring Service Learning • Florida/Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (FGLSAMP) • FAMU TRIO Programs: • Upward Bound • Black Male Explorers • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) • National Society of Black Engineers • CIS Mentoring Organization • Promote IT in the classroom by providing real-world technology training to students and teachers • Establish a mentoring/outreach program for IT-interested students and teachers • Build partnerships between high school and community programs and FAMU • ExposeK-12 students to the world of IT and various research and career opportunities • Encourage K-12 students to stay in school and assist them in identifying and realizing their academic goals • Community-based programs that meet at local sites, such as the YMCA/YWCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Neighborhood Network Centers • School-based mentoring which focuses on academic achievement and recruitment • Work-based mentoring with emphasis on learning basic IT skills and technology training • Connect significant community service experiences with academic learning for current CS/IT students • Provide cross-cultural experiences for students • Foster in students a greater responsibility for their learning • Foster a re-affirmation of students’ career choices through hands-on and practical exposure to IT topics • Develop self-awareness and self-esteem of CS/IT students (“Identity”) Recruitment/Retention • Visiting local K-12 schools to speak to students about CS/IT careers and opportunities • Create “Adopted Lab” communities at K-12 schools, where SLC students serve as technology advisors to on-campus clubs focused on CS/IT • Present workshops to current CS/IT majors that provide them with exposure to research areas in the field • Develop bridge programs between FAMU and community colleges to strengthen the pipeline For Information: • FAMU STARS SLC • Florida A&M University • CIS Department • P.O.
