  2. Warm-up • Would you give up some of your rights to protect your country?

  3. Vocabulary • Civil liberties- rights that protect an individual from the government of the nation in which they reside • Internment camps- imprisonment or confinement of a group of people with out a trial.

  4. Civil Liberties • What are some civil liberties that we as Americans have?

  5. Property confiscation • American Germans and Japanese were subjected to having their property taken from them if they were thought to be spies. • The government gave them no real reason for taking the property and did not pay them for that property.

  6. Internment • Many Japanese Americans were forced from their homes and put into internment camps where they were away from family and friends. • Most of the camps were in remote parts of the western parts of the United States. • The U.S. was paranoid about spies which is why they had a policy of internment (Executive Order 9066 )

  7. Exclusion from Military Zones • Some German and Japanese Americans were not allowed on military bases and other military zones. • Despite this many Japanese and German Americans served in the American Armed forces during this time.

  8. Deportation • Some immigrants from Japan and Germany were forced back to their countries. • Many had been living in the United States for much of their lives

  9. Registration requirements • Almost 600,000 Italian Americans were required to register with the government as enemy aliens and had to carry identification cards • Some Japanese and German Americans also faced these requirements

  10. Travel Restrictions • Many Italian, German and Japanese Americans were not allowed in coastal zones of the countries. • In addition, some were given curfews and stopped from traveling from their homes.

  11. Stations • There are four stations set up around the room. • Go to each station and fill out the graphic organizer on the back of your notes sheet. • You have about 15 minutes to finish this activity. • Sit in your seat when you are done.

  12. Exit Slip Write a speech pretending that they are either a supporter of the government’s actions or a protestor, protesting the restriction of civil liberties. The speech much be at least 1paragraphs and should be a persuasive argument for why the government should be allowed to restrict civil liberties or why it was a violation of our rights as Americans to restrict civil liberties.
