  1. Indaba: Tools to lower the cost and time of measuring global and local social issues Open Up Topic: Participation, Empowering Citizens to Demand Change London, Nov 13th 2012

  2. Indaba aims to… • … dramatically lower the time and cost of measuring and tracking fuzzy social issues (transparency, service delivery, human rights, etc.), while promoting and sharing best practices and methodologies across the social sector.  • … facilitating project management of large-scale research projects, in which collaboration with hundreds of people in dozens of countries, provinces, municipalities, universities or clinics usually requires emailing hundreds of files back and forth with a large number of colleagues, leading to version control nightmares, inaccurate information, and strained relationships.

  3. Why? • There are very few tools that address the issue of managing workflows in projects, and fewer that integrate content and relationship tools. • Content management systems (such as Drupal or Wordpress) are good at storing and publishing content, but don’t support the internal workflow of organizations or their projects. • Project management systems, on the other hand, typically are not good content databases. • Online survey tools -such as Survey Monkey and Google Forms- are useful for collecting one-time answers but not for reviewing, discussing, debating, editing, or publishing those answers after their initial submission.

  4. Results • Indaba helps organizations design projects, collect data, write reports, edit documents, clean datasets, conduct quality control and peer review, and then publish or export the results, all from a web browser. • It has tools to manage relationships, messaging, control access to common content, and promote accountability for a group of contributors working on a data gathering or publishing project. • It’s 100% web-based and works in low band-width situations. • Flexible roles and workflows, which are set up according to each project’s needs. • Less time and lower cost of measuring and tracking issues from transparency to service delivery, allowing reformers to maximize their resources and the impact of their research efforts.

  5. Indaba in Action Originally developed to manage the Global Integrity Report –which involves around 150 contributors in nearly 40 countries working on over 300 indicators in any given year-, Indaba is now used by several organizations: • Web Index- World Wide Web Foundation • 2012 Aid Transparency Index - Publish What You Fund • Defense Companies Anti-Corruption Index – TI-UK • Revenue Watch Index - Revenue Watch Institute • Access to Information in Mexican Municipalities - IMCO
