  2. Today’s Goal • You understand WHAT LinkedIn is • You understand WHY it is a good idea • You can go home and know HOW to set it up

  3. What is LinkedIn? (high level) • Popular social networking site primarily for business professional relationships • It can give “non IT developers” a web presence • Find contacts, be found, find jobs, find answers. • If you are a PPNer, you should be “LinkedIn”.

  4. LinkedIn Quick Facts • Launched in December 2002 • About half of of their members are outside the U.S. • Two years ago they had about 2 million members • LinkedIn now has over 36 million members in over 200 countries and territories around the world. • A new member joins LinkedIn approximately every second • LinkedIn's CEO is founder Reid Hoffman. Hoffman, previously an executive vice president of PayPal, also is Chairman of the Board. • Users over 45 now account for a whopping 31 percent of LinkedIn’s user base. • The web site URL is www.linkedin.com

A few things you can do on LinkedIn • Create a profile page so you can “be found” • Find jobs, people and business connections • Create a network of connections (contacts) • Direct connections (people you know and trust) • Second degree connections (your direct contact’s connections) • Third degree connections (connection’s of your second degree connections)

  6. A few more things you can do on LinkedIn • Get recommendations • Join alumni, industry, or professional groups • Use LinkedIn answers • Read about what your connections are up to • Send messages to and receive messages from your connections
