  9. Employers’ perceptions However, could do more to develop the right behaviours... Employers are looking for people who: • have the ability to adapt their style to suit different audiences • take ownership and responsibility for tasks and processes • are willing to get involved in work outside of their area • proactively take responsibility for their own development and career progression • are collegiate in their approach to work and situations • have a short transition from academia to industry ...and preferably with relevant work experience www.grad.ac.uk/nationalconference2006

Challenges • Cultural change within HE critical • embedding CPD for researchers within research degrees • supporting supervisors • valuing non-academic careers • Raising the profile of doctoral skills and attributes with employers • promote HE and non-HE career structures • overcome stereotyping of PhDs • encourage more interaction between HE and employers
