  3. Why Diction? • People need to understand • It makes you look good • Builds credibility • “Smart people speak clearly”

  4. Diction Exercises(Not tongue twisters) • What a to do, to die today, at a minute or two til two. A thing distinctly hard to say but harder still to do. • Unique New York. Unique New York. You know I need unique New York.

  5. Why Tone? • Does words justice • Does poet justice • Brings out the best in the speaker • Makes poem exciting

  6. Tone Exercise • Find or make up boring sentence • Say it to yourself using different emotions • Success = getting opposing reaction to original intention. • Ex. “I fell in love this weekend,” invoking a negative response.

  7. Try it. With a partner near you, please recite the following phrases using these tones: Happy Angry Sad Confused Apathetic Dumfounded Imagine a world without staplers. I’m finished with my homework. I’ve got two tickets to paradise. Have you ever seen anything like that before? (Your favorite movie quote)

  8. Songs • Figure out your poet’s goal • Inspire? -Depress? • Pump up? -Chill out? • Figure out where mood changes take place • Mark them • Figure out how to portray those emotions • Find words that are difficult to pronounce • Mark them
