Entry Task • On a piece of paper…. • 1. You are a Pilgrim, packing to leave for the New World. What do you bring with you? State the purpose for each of your items. • Example: I would bring an Ax so I could use it to chop wood and for self defense. • You can only pack 6 Items. • Food is already packed
Separatists vs. Puritans • Wanted to split from the Church of England • Believed the King should not be the head of the Church • Settled at Plymouth • Wanted to change the Church of England • Believed the King should not be the head of the Church • Settled in Massachusetts
Calvinism • Predestination. • Good works could not save those predestined for hell. • No one could be certain of their spiritual status. • Gnawing doubts led to constantly seeking signs of “conversion.”
Separatist Beliefs: (don’t have to take notes) • Puritans who believed only “visible saints” [those who could demonstrate in front of their fellow Puritans their elect status] should be admitted to church membership. • Because the Church of England enrolled all the king’s subjects, Separatists felt they had to share churches with the “damned.” • Therefore, they believed in a total break from the Church of England
The Mayflower • Became squatters without legal right to land & specific authority to establish a govt. • Negotiated with theVirginia Company to settle in its jurisdiction. • Non-Separatists included Captain Myles Standish. • Plymouth Bay way outside the domain of the Virginia Company. • 1620 a group of 102 people [half Separatists]
The Mayflower CompactNovember 11, 1620 • Written and signed before the Pilgrims disembarked from the ship. • Not a constitution, but an agreement to form a crude govt. and submit to majority rule. • Signed by 41 adult males.
That First Year…. • Winter of 1620-1621 • Nearly Half died • None chose to leave in 1621 when the Mayflower sailed back. • Fall of 1621 First “Thanksgiving.” • Colony survived with fur [especially beaver], fish, and lumber. • Plymouth stayed small and economically unimportant. • 1691 only 7,000 people • Merged with Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Native Americans • A Native American named Samoset walked into their settlement • Spoke broken English • Introduced them to Squanto • Squanto had lived in Europe • Taught the Pilgrims how to fertilize using fish in the soil.
The Great Migration • Puritans left England due to religious persecution • 40,000 left to join the New England colonist • Formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony • Included the Pilgrim’s colony
