Aphrodite/VenusGoddess of love and beauty • Physical Traits: gorgeous, perfect, eternally young woman with beautiful body • Personality Traits: conceited (stuck on herself), flirtatious, not faithful to her husband, Hephaestus • Important Family Members: Married to Hephaestus; one child, Eros. • Symbols/Power: her girdle, which has magical powers to compel love; myrtle (tree), dove, swan, and sparrow (birds), rose (flower), apple, dolphin and ram • Interesting Facts: She was born from the foam of the sea; usually pictured with a mirror.

Apollo/ApolloGoddess of music, poetry and medicine (God of Light) • Physical Traits: handsome young man with curly golden hair; carries a bow and arrow • Personality Traits: creative; supportive of all of the arts; thoughtful; “enjoyed the charms of nymphs too often” • Important Family Members: son of Zeus; twin sister, Artemis; not married, but relationships with many; children=Orpheus and Asklepios • Symbols/Power: powers include healing, inspiring learning, and making the sun rise and set; symbols include: sun, lyre, bow and arrow, chariot, laurel (tree), number 7 • Interesting Facts: He was known for killing may mythological monsters; most important daily task was to harness his chariot with four horses and move the sun across the sky.

Power: changing people into animals • Interesting Facts: She would punish a hunter for killing more game than they needed to eat.

She accidentally shot her friend Pallas with a bow and arrow.

Demeter / CeresGoddess of Agriculture and Grain • Physical Traits: Pleasant looking older woman who carried wheat or horn • Personality Traits: controls fertility of the earth, not someone to cross lightly or anger • Important Family Members: daughter of Cronos and Rhea; Zeus’ sister; children: Persephone • Symbols/Power: symbols: torch, sheaf of wheat or barley, cornucopia; powers: able to make plants and trees grow or die • Interesting Facts: She roamed the earth rewarding some cities with good harvests and punishing others with poor harvests; in her search for Persephone, she created the 4 seasons.

Dionysus / BacchusGod of Wine, Fertility and Music • Physical Traits: Handsome young man with hair below his shoulders and a wrath of ivy on his head; carried a THYRSOS – a light staff wrapped with ivy leaves and topped with a pine cone • Personality Traits: always associated with drama, social (attending parties), light-heartedness, very popular among the Gods and mortals • Important Family Members: Parents: Zeus and Semele (a mortal heroine) • Symbols/Power: symbols: grape vine, ivy wreath, rose, drinking goblet powers: creating happiness or unhappiness for mortals • Interesting Facts: He was the youngest of the Olympian Gods; invented wine and art of growing the grapes

Hades/Pluto god of the Underworld ruler of the dead Physical Traits: Usually depicted as a dark-bearded, regal god who wears a crown and scepter Personality Traits: Intimidating; can be tricky and deceitful, usually feared and hated Important Family Members: married to Persephone, brother to the other Olympians gods Symbols/Power: Cerebus, the three-headed guard dog; helmet of darkness or invisibility; his chariot Interesting Facts: He kidnapped Persephone and tricked her into staying with him for several months a year. This is why the seasons change.

  9. Hephaestus / Vulcan god of fire, volcanoes metalworking, stone masonry and sculpting Physical Traits: usually depicted as a bearded man holding a hammer. He is the only ugly god and is lame: either cannot walk or has trouble walking. Personality Traits: usually considered kind Important Family Members: married to Aphrodite; the son of Hera Symbols/Power: axe, tongs, hammer; he was a craftsman/blacksmith Interesting Facts: thrown from Mt. Olympus because he was ugly; no father; chained Prometheus to the rock; seen often with Cyclopes, who are also craftsmen.

Hera / Juno queen of the gods; goddess of marriage and childbirth Physical Traits: usually depicted as beautiful, mature, wearing a crown, and holding a lotus-tipped staff Personality Traits: jealous and quarrelsome Important Family Members: married to Zeus, her brother; mother of Hephaestus Symbols/Power: peacock, lily/lotus, pomegranate (symbol of marital love and fruitfulness) Interesting Facts: the month of June is named after her; many people marry in June, and she’s the goddess of marriage; she hated Hercules.

  11. Hermes / Mercury messenger of the gods; god of commerce, thievery, music, travelers Physical Traits: Usually depicted as a young man, carrying a staff, wearing a winged hat and winged sandals. Sometimes seen with wings on his back. Personality Traits: known as helpful and inventive, but also a lying thief. He is often a guide to others. Important Family Members: son of Zeus; father of Pan Symbols/Power: good at stealing, inventing, lying, and traveling. He has many symbols: caduceus (his staff), the purse, the winged sandals, his hat. Interesting Facts: His job is to bring the dead to the Underworld.

  12. Hestia / Vesta goddess of the hearth; goddess of the home Physical Traits: Usually seen seated by the hearth with a serious but kind expression Personality Traits: The virgin goddess. She is serious but gentle. All Olympian gods loved and respected her Important Family Members: sister of Zeus; first born of Cronus and Rhea; she never had children. Symbols/Power: The hearth (fire place) Interesting Facts:Each Greek city had a public hearth sacred to Hestia, where the fire was never allowed to go out; she never left home.

  13. Posideon / Neptune god of the sea, rivers, floods and droughts, earthquakes, and horses. Physical Traits: Usually depicted as a mature man of sturdy build with a dark beard, and holding a trident. Personality Traits: creative, warlike, moody, unpredictable, womanizer Important Family Members: father to Polyphemus, the Cyclops; father to many. Some unusual children include a Cyclops, the horse, and the Pegasus. Symbols/Power: the three-pronged trident; associated with horses, believed to be the force behind earthquakes, possibly due to the association between earthquakes and tsunamis in Greece. Interesting Facts: designed all creatures of the sea; created the zebra

But representations of Zeus as a powerful young man also exist. Personality Traits: Highly powerful, strong, charming, persuasive, temperamental, womanizer, moody; can be a bully Important Family Members: married to Hera; has TONS of children…some gods, some demigods. Famous kids include Hercules, Perseus, Dionysus, and Athena; Zeus is the youngest child of Cronus and Rhea Symbols/Power: thunderbolt, eagle; can disguise himself to hide from Hera and to seduce women Interesting Facts: defeated his father after his father swallowed all his brothers and sisters; ordered the creation of man/woman
