  1. 2013 Housing Needs Survey “We Change Lives by Providing Opportunities for Success.”

  2. Why this survey was conducted… • Determine what the housing experience of Southwest Tech students is like. • Determine whether the need for additional housing within the Southwest Tech district exists. • Learn what our students want in terms of housing availability. How was the survey administered? • Because we already had a Student Satisfaction survey scheduled for mid-March, we opted to piggy-back on this opportunity of having such a large audience of students. • A hard copy of the survey was inserted into the Student Satisfaction survey. • As we administered the Student Satisfaction survey, we also gave students the opportunity to participate in the Housing Survey. • All responses were manually entered into SurveyMonkey. This tool allows us to download and analyze the results using several different methods/formats.

  3. Who provided feedback? When the demographics of our sample audience closely matches the overall demographics of our student population, which it does, we can say with confidence the opinions/feedback provided in the survey are what we would expect from the majority of Southwest Tech students. A total of 960 responses from program students were obtained from the annual Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction survey in 2013. Of those, 707 (74% of the total) students also participated in the 2013 Housing Survey. Demographics for the sample audience are below. Demographics of students surveyed

  4. Where are our students coming from? • 144 respondents said they had to move in order to attend Southwest Tech (20% of all 707 students surveyed). This map indicates where students moved from. • 105 of those respondents who moved currently live either in Fennimore or within 15 miles of Fennimore. (15% of all 707 students surveyed)

  5. Where would students prefer to live?(640 of 707 responded)

  6. Where would students prefer to live? 197 students surveyed responded to this question.

  7. 35 Number of respondents currently living with childrenwho said they would prefer to live closer to Southwest Tech. (5% of all 707 surveyed)

  8. Was it easy to find rental housing that fit their needs?(334 students responded) 67% of respondents agreed that it was easy to find rental housing that fit their needs.

  9. How do students learn about available housing?(307 students responded) *Other sources given were: Craig’s List and Government Program

  10. Is the current housing available affordable?(447 students responded) Somewhat Agree Strongly Disagree Disagree Neither Agree or Disagree Somewhat Disagree Agree Strongly Agree

  11. Is current housing available safe?(576 students responded) Strongly Agree Agree Somewhat Agree Neither Agree or Disagree Somewhat Disagree Disagree Strongly Disagree

  12. What did students say?

  13. Summary Assuming the samples are representative, it can be inferred that among the 960 students in our one- and two-year technical diploma and associate degree programs who were given the Noel-Levitz survey: • About 191 students without children would prefer to live closer to Southwest Tech. College housing provides room for 100. • About 48 currently living with children would prefer to live closer to Southwest Tech. The College offers no family housing. • Only about 172 students thought it difficult to find rental housing to fit their needs. • The most effective means of advertising is #1 word-of-mouth, #2 newspaper ads, and #3 (tie) internet ads and signage to attract drive-by’s. • Affordability and safety did not seem to be significant concerns.
