The Industrial Revolution & Imperialism • American industry and product production rose as a result of the Industrial Revolution. • Americans could not buy all the goods the country was producing = looked to foreign markets • In order to reach far off places, the U.S. need to build………??????

America in the Virgin Islands • Named by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Only U.S. Territory where traffic drives on the left . • In 1917 during WWI, the United States bought the Islands and they became a territory.
What is a Territory??? • The people who live on the islands are U.S. citizens, but cannot vote in U.S. Presidential elections, but can vote in primaries. • The residents have been given the choice of independence or statehood.

In Cuba Rough Riders • Military unit commanded by Leonard Wood and organized by Theodore Roosevelt • 1000 college athletes, cowboys, American Indians, & ranchers • charged on foot • Most soldiers were half naked • -July 3- Entire Spanish fleet sunk & no damage • done to U.S. ships the war ends! • Majority of soldiers died due to disease • and bacteria not bullets
Results of the war • Teller Amendment- U.S. would give Cuba its freedom if it overthrew Spanish rule. • Spain looses Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines to the U.S. • US pays $20 million for Philippines • Each new land is ruled in a different manner
