  1. Learning about Yourself: How Experience shapes your Identity Identity PowerPoint #1 There is more to learn and discover in college than what will be on the test. You will also be challenged to learn about who you are and what you believe.

  2. We are all different andmost differences are learned We are different in our beliefs and behaviors. We have learned these from others. • Parents • Family members • School • Church • Friends • Activities like sports, music, organizations, clubs • Media like TV, movies, Facebook, gaming, etc.

  3. How are we different? • Our attitudes and behavior toward our career and education are different because of our past experiences. • Our interests and values are different because of the people we have interacted with in our lives. • Our personal relationships with others depends on our personality and friendships.

  4. Where did we learn these behaviors and attitudes? Lets begin with attitudes toward school. Where did you learn your attitude toward school and learning? Who taught you how to learn and study? • Parents ? • Teachers ? • Friends ? • Brothers or Sisters ? Share with your Learning Community where you got your attitude toward school. Will that help you in college or hurt you?

  5. Where did we learn attitudes and goals about careers? The average freshman changes their major 4 – 6 times in their first year of college They often don’t have a clear vision of their career or a major. • Do you have a major? How is it connected to a career? • How did you decide what you want to do after college? • “Pressure” from Parents? • Encouraged by Teachers? • Peer pressure? • You have no idea? • It’s not important. Share with your Learning Community what you want to major in and what you want to do after college. If you don’t know, how will that effect you in school?

  6. We often have values and attitudes we have learned from family and friends • Your textbook describes more than 10 dimensions of diversity. Which types of diversity have you experienced in work and school? Which dimensions of diversity would be new to you in college? • Racial Diversity • Religious Diversity • Age Diversity • Ethnic Diversity • Ideological Diversity • Social Class Diversity • Sexual Orientation Diversity • Physical, Mental, Emotional Diversity Share with your Learning Community which diversities you have the least experience. Will college change your values and attitudes?

  7. Relationships in College are Different • In high school you were likely to be friends with students very much like yourself. If you are a non-traditional aged student you probably have friends that are similar in age and beliefs. But in college you are more likely to have friends that are very diverse. • Can you be friends with people very different from you? How will diversities effect your relationship? • Racial diversity, Ethnic diversity, Social-class diversity • Religious diversity, Age diversity, Ideological diversity

  8. How does our past effect decisions in college about our Identity? • Most students come to college with an Identity they have created from experiences with family, school, church, friends, and other influences. • Identity is a sense of who you are including your career aspirations, your values, and your plans for the future. When young adults come to college this sense of Identity often is challenged which can cause problems.

  9. Let’s Compare 2 Potential Problem StudentsHow might differences lead to similar problems? The Potential Problem Students are diverse with many ages, identities, and problems. To understand how a student’s Identity can impact college, let’s compare two students who are the same age but have very different Identities. Felicia Daniel Mark Feliciahas entered college: engaged to a guy she’s dated for years; planning on majoring in education without ever thinking about her options; and with values identical to her parents and boyfriend … without ever thinking about them. • D.M. was fairly independent and somewhat rebellious in high school. He lacks confidence in school, has been challenging the values his parents taught him, but is confident in his relationship with his high school girl friend. How are they similar and different?

How will differences effect school? Could either cause trouble?
