  2. MENTEES In November 2009 I started the mentoring program with the following staff members. • Darryl Thompson • Mark Schild • Steve Page • Luke Montgomery • Donato Deiesio • Alan Holroyd • Nic Turner • Lachlan Harris • Carl Withey • Lorraine McKenzie • Yvette Fisher

SKILL SETS • To date all of these have been involved in developing their own Moodle sites which are currently in various stages of development from fully developed to just starting. • I have spent time with each of the mentees and have booked separate times with each of them to progress their skills with Moodle. • I have introduced Jing as a medium of communicating on Moodle as well as using it for communicating with students as a feedback mechanism for assignments. • Hot Potatoes has been introduced as a medium for quizzes both in computing classes and Moodle. • Centra has been demonstrated to those lecturers involved in the EDC program to propose a method of communicating with external students enrolled through this program in hotel management. • Using appropriate Moodle sites with Centra would be a very advantageous way of communicating with all external students. • Eportfolios was introduced to some members last year with a class run by Michael Coglin but privacy issues prevented us including this in the proposed Computing class but the skills gained in this class were most useful in working with Moodle. • I have arranged two hour blocks of time with participating members in the next four weeks to ensure that their skills in Moodle , Jing, Centra and Hot Potatoes are supported as much as possible before I leave TAFE. • I am retiring from TAFE on 15th June 2010 and hope that my legacy will be the fully developed sites of many of the subjects we teach in this area. • My own site of Business Planning and Manage Financial Operations is fully developed and currently in use with students enrolled in Stage 3 of Hospitality Management.

  4. MENTORING PROGRAM Darryl Thompson • In November 2009, I approached Darryl about the mentoring program and he was interested in taking part. He was particularly interested in the development of a Moodle site for his subjects which are often delivered by other lecturers and to students off campus. Darryl is an ASL 1 in Cookery and has been developing course materials for many years. His skills include: • Course development • Writing teaching materials • Delivering in class • Word, Excel and PowerPoint • We applied for a Moodle site and began a training session each week using my own site for reference. • The basics of filing and file organisation were paramount as this was important to the successful transferring of files to the Moodle site. • Each week we concentrated on a new activity from file organisation, session planning, using YouTube and search engines. We also concentrated on the use of Jing as a method of ‘voice over's’ to use and an alternative method of communication on the site. • Darryl has built a large number of quiz games using Hot Potatoes which has been very successful in the cookery site. • Darryl has built his site with a number of interactive methods of teaching. • The site now has a range of different viewing files, activities, games, research sites, an assessment together with audio instructions. • Darryl has since enrolled several other cookery colleagues into his subject who are themselves interested in building their own Moodle sites. • Darryl has been instrumental in engaging, encouraging and enthusiastically demonstrating the benefits of Moodle in cookery delivery to the rest of his work group and management. • In discussions with him over the past months he is now confident of his ability to help and mentor other staff with building their own Moodle sites. He is also a great advocate of Moodle and its potential in the future for delivery in the Cookery Program.

MENTORING PROGRAM Lachlan Harris • Lachlan has highly developed computer skills as he has been teaching computing at all levels of Hospitality from Cert. 111 to Diploma level. • He is currently developing a new subject ‘Operation plan’ which he hopes to be able to put on to the Moodle site in the near future. • Lachlan has been introduced to Jing and Hot Potatoes and has been experimenting with both with the view of incorporating both mediums on his site. • Lachlan also attended an introduction to “E-Portfolios’ at the end of 2009 and showed great aptitude for these on-line skills which he will be able to transfer easily to developing his Moodle site in the near future. • Lachlan has also been shown Centra when Gail has been on-line with others in the mentoring program and has expressed interest in incorporating this in the ‘Traineeship’ program. • He is highly experience in all web based programs and he has shown an excellent aptitude for this type of work in the department. • Lachlan will be an ideal mentor in the future for others in the department because of his current computing abilities together with his enthusiasm for all technology based mediums.

  6. Lorraine has highly developed skills in the area of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and has written several teaching resources for the department. Her specialty areas are finance but this year she has started teaching Business Planning. The existing Moodle site for Business Planning has currently over 50 students enrolled and Lorraine together with Gail is teaching from that site. Students are able to access the site at will and are also submitting assignments through the site. As the new course has been developed this year, both Lorraine and Gail have updated the site on a regular basis with a range of resources and websites for research purposes. Lorraine has been practicing with Jing to use for feedback for students’ assignments and for general information for the Moodle site. Hot Potatoes is currently being introduced as a method of engaging students in the next site which will be Manage Financial Operations. Both Gail and Lorraine will be developing this site in the near future as the new resources are developed and written. Lorraine is also involved in the EDC program with the Hilton Hotel and the possibility of using Moodle together with Centra has been discussed as a future method of communicating and educating external students in the EDC program. Gail has also been instructing Lorraine on the use of Centra for this purpose. Lorraine will be an excellent mentor for other staff in the future. MENTORING PROGRAM Lorraine McKenzie

MENTORING PROGRAM Luke Montgomery • Luke has highly developed computer skills as he has been teaching computing at all levels of Hospitality from Cert. 111 to Advanced Diploma level. • He is currently developing a new subject ‘Payroll’ which he hopes to be able to put on to the Moodle site in the near future. • Luke has been introduced to Jing and Hot Potatoes and has been experimenting with both with the view of incorporating both mediums on his site. • Luke also attended an introduction to “E-Portfolios’ at the end of 2009 and showed great aptitude for these on-line skills which he will be able to transfer easily to developing his Moodle site in the near future. • Luke has also been shown Centra when Gail has been on-line with others in the mentoring program and has expressed interest in incorporating this in the EDC program. • Luke is highly experience in all web based programs and is the current ‘go-to’ person in the department for these types of areas. • Luke will be an ideal mentor in the future for others in the department because of his current computing abilities together with his enthusiasm for all technology based mediums.

  8. MENTORING PROGRAMMark Schild • Mark Schild was situated at Adelaide south TAFE in 2009 and transferred to Regency North • in January 2010. Mark assumed the subject of Manage Physical Assets when he transferred and as this subject was already established as a Moodle site he took over the administration of the site in January. • Since that time he has developed the site with new learning materials and assessment tools. He has also developed some quizzes, games and crosswords as learning tools to make the site more interactive and attractive to students. • He has spent time learning how to administer the site and enhance and enlarge the amount of materials available. • Mark has experimented with Jing as a voice over method of communication. • Mark has over 50 student currently enrolled on his site and they are using the site on a regular basis. • He is in constant communication with his students via the site and will be developing other subjects on Moodle in the near future. • Mark’s computer skills and knowledge are quite advanced and his aptitude for this area is highly developed. • He will be an excellent mentor for other staff in the future.

  9. MENTORING PROGRAM Steve Page • Steve has been previously involved in developing on-line tools via the Janison platform. He has several years’ experience in the delivery of courses via Janison and is particularly keen to transfer over to Moodle as soon as possible. • Because of his previous experience Steve has found the basics of Moodle easy to grasp and has started building the site within hours of tuition from me. • I have introduced him to Jing and the possibilities of using this medium on his site as the subject is ‘Gaming machines’ and Jing is a perfect medium for showing each type of machine and giving a verbal description at the same time. • I have introduced Steve to Hot Potatoes for quizzes and games which he is keen to establish on the site as well. • Steve is also now adept at using Youtube and other web based instruction mediums which have helped him develop his on-line skills. • We have spent quite some time on establishing a good filing system to ensure that all the information he is storing is easy to find and utilise. • Steve is keen to have extra tuition on photo shop and any other areas to do with graphics which is an important part of his site. • Most of his students will be external and it is important that the Moodle site be ready by the end of the year when he thinks the Janison site will no longer be available to them.
