Population • People are spread unevenly across Earth • 90% of world’s lives in Northern Hemisphere • 2/3rds of people live in middle latitudes • Most people live in lowland areas along fertile river valleys near edges of continents • Why is the world’s population so unevenly distributed? • People tend to live in areas favorable for settlement • Mild climates, fertile soils, & lots of fresh water

  3. Population Density Map

  4. 4 Great Clusters of Population 1. East Asia- China, Japan 2. South Asia- India & Pakistan 3. Europe- Germany, England 4. Eastern North America

  5. 4 Population Clusters

  6. 3 Factors of Population Change 1. Birthrate- number of people born each year 2. Death rate- number of people who die each year 3. Migration- process of moving from one place to live in another World population clock: http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/

  7. World Population Trends • World’s population has increased rapidly over the last 200 years Population increased caused by: 1. New farming practices 2. Sanitation improvements 3. Modern medicine • Currently, the world’s population is 7.2 billion people

  8. Map of population growth

  9. Migration • Humans began migrating out of Africa 1-2 million years ago • Moved to Asia and Europe 2 factors that cause migration: 1. Push factors: causes people to leave a location • Ex: lost job, wars, & natural disasters 2. Pull factors: attract people to a new location • Ex: New job & better climate • Refugees: people who have been forced to leave & cannot return to their homes

  13. Cultural Diffusion • Diffusion: when an idea or innovation is adopted by other groups • Caused by: • Migration • War • Trade • Communication • Innovation- new ideas that spread • Ex: Printing press; basketball • Cultural diffusion can be slowed by physical barriers • Ex: mountains, deserts, oceans, etc.
