  5. When individual countries began to explore and colonize new lands, a period of time in which industry rapidly grew began called the Industrial Revolution. • The first industry to be revolutionized was the textile industry, which is the manufacturing of cloth.

  6. The factory system—which is run by people using large machines to create products—completely changed the way products were made. • Before the factory system, people would have to manufacture cloth in their own homes. • Factories at first were powered by water, but in 1776 James Watt created the steam engine, which was powered by coal.

  7. In 1825, the first railroad was built in England, and by 1850, thousands of miles of tracks covered Europe. • While factories increased production, the need for labor was extremely high; children as young as 5 were forced to work for up to 16 hours a day and some were even chained to machines.

While many countries in Europe benefitted from the industrial revolution, French citizens were still struggling from poor harvests and high prices. • French mobs chose to storm the Bastille thinking the government was hiding guns and gunpowder that could be used against them.   11. French society was split into three groups before the French Revolution, known as the Three Estates. • The first estate was clergy, the second estate was nobility, and the third estate consisted of all remaining citizens (merchants & peasants)

King Louis XVI refused to cooperate with an idea that would have him share power with an elected legislature. • After a few years of working to establish a new form of government, a radical revolutionary group called the Jacobins executed Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette. • After their deaths, a Reign of Terror ensued with nearly 40,000 people being executed by the guillotine.

  13. After years of conflict, both foreign and domestic, a young general by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew the government. • He declared himself Emperor Napoleon I and ruled until he was defeated by Prussia and Britain in 1815.
