Linked Data Version of Dewey Decimal Classification Now Available in Multiple Languages

The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) has launched an experimental space for linked data, providing access to the top three levels of the DDC in ten languages. This new version includes actionable URIs for each class, encoded classification semantics in SKOS, and data representations for both machines and humans. The data is reusable under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license, facilitating easy access and integration. The resource is designed for web lookups and offers enhanced geographic information retrieval capabilities through linked geographic data.

  4. Requirements for publishing Linked Data • Identification • Every data entity has a URI • Access • HTTP as protocol (established infrastructure: WWW) • User agent indicates which data formats it accepts • Representation • for machines • RDF as data model • SKOS, Dublin Core, ccREL, etc. as vocabularies • for humans • HTML, etc. • “Openness” of the data set

  5. Use Case: Basic web lookup • “If someone has the URI of that thing, what relationships to what other objects is it useful to know about?”(Tim Berners-Lee) • A web page for every class of the Dewey Summaries, e.g.: • <http://dewey.info/class/641/>

  6. Demo: dewey.info • http://dewey.info/class/641/ • http://dewey.info/class/641/about.rdf • http://dewey.info/class/641/about.en • http://dewey.info/class/641/about.sv • http://dewey.info/class/641/2009/08/about.ar.html • http://dewey.info/class/641/2009/08/about.ar.rdf

  10. Geocoding? • Adding geographic coordinates from other (geographic) data • Coordinates are added to Dewey classes in Table 2 • Example • AustraliaT2—943 Queensland: -20.0,145.0 • OhioT2—77156 Franklin County: 39.966731,-83.0165727[+39° 58', -83° 1'] • Useful for geographic information retrieval (spatial queries) in combination with new 085 fields
