  1. Act 5 Starter: What happened in Act 4 of the play? Were we at the: Exposition Complication Resolution? Why do you think that? What evidence can you find? Learning Objective – to explore Act 5 – the resolution of the play.

  2. Act 5, Scene 1: Leonato is shocked by the news still. In his grief, he rages against Antonio’s attempts to calm him. His only daughter has been shamed in public and ruined. Antonio is worried about him. Although until now Leonato had trusted Don Pedro and Claudio, he now turns his anger on them instead. Leonato challenges Claudio to a duel. He tells Claudio that Hero is dead and Claudio shows no regret or remorse. Both Leonato and Antonio want to fight Claudio – they both point out how young and arrogant Claudio is.

  3. Benedick is welcomed by Don Pedro and Claudio. They hope he will cheer them up, it takes them a while to realise that Benedick is really angry and is looking to challenge Claudio to a duel. Benedick now challenges Claudio to fight a duel, as he had promised Beatrice. It is accepted as something of a joke and a chance to ridicule Benedick, who does not reply.

  4. Benedickdoes not rise to their humour and departs. He tells Don Pedro that his brother has run away. Dogberry then brings Borachio in. Borachio confesses straight away that he set up the deception about Hero with Margaret. He is full of shame and remorse and will accept the punishment he deserves.

  5. The discovery shocks Don Pedro and Claudio. Leonato’s anger at Borachio turns back again to Don Pedro and Claudio. Claudio accepts that he must be punished. Leonato wants them to inform the people of Messina that Hero was innocent of the slander. They must also hang a mourning verse on her tomb. Leonato does however, offer Claudio a second chance to marry.
