  1. Information & Library Services A guide to using OHSIS from IHS/Technical Indexes Alice Fulcher August 2006

  2. Go to university home page – www.gre.ac.uk – and click on ‘student portal’

  3. Use your university network username and password to login, in or outside the university

  4. Go to the Library & Computing tab on the portal then Click on Databases & Journals or (via Athens DA)

  5. Click on either of these to get to the Athens DA login

  6. Use your same university username and password to login to Athens DA

  7. Go to the MyAthens page to access the databases

  8. Click on Resources to see list of databases available

  9. Click on database name from the alphabetical list

  10. Technical Indexes Home page – for all databases

  11. Can do a quick search across all databases available, by typing term in box and press search

  12. Results from Quick search – click result to see list of documents

  13. Select OHSIS by clicking on “view product”

  14. OHSIS home page

  15. Select type of search, or help

  16. The simple search box is at the top of the home page – just put in keyword and click on search. Tick Search full text to find word in all text

  17. Can sort results in different ways

  18. Can arrange lists in different ways – restrict legislation, select a year or organisation etc

  19. Results are listed – click on “i” for more information about the document

  20. Gives details of date and size of publication. Can view full document from here, as well as from list

  21. You have to agree to conditions before seeing the document. You must have Adobe Acrobat to be able to read it

  22. Full text appears as scanned images. Can save or print out – print a few pages at a time, so printer does not get overloaded. Number of pages is listed at the bottom

  23. Choosing Advanced search from home page allows document numbers – easiest way to find British Standards, BRE Papers etc. Can choose organisation from list

  24. From Advanced search screen, can browse organisations

  25. Select from list and click to see full list of documents available

  26. With any big lists, can sort by different ways

  27. Sorting by publication year (descending) means most recent documents come first

  28. Document number search means only one document was found

  29. Can tick box to add to your favourites, then click to add to favourites folder

  30. Can access favourites from Tools on toolbar

  31. Contents of favourites folder – can go straight to document

  32. You can look at various briefings or news feeds from the links on the Home page, and some from the menu as well

  33. You have to agree the conditions in order to open up the Health & Safety News Brief in a new window

  34. Health & Safety News Feed – Environmental Management also available

  35. Document Alert shows updated documents either as a daily update, or can choose how many days. Can sort in several ways

  36. Don’t forget to logout when you have finished. It will logout automatically after 15 minutes of no activity
