  1. Ge Quantum Dots (QD) Nanocomposites, S. Ismat Shah (PI) DMR-0441619 Using a very simple vacuum deposition process, we prepared Ge-TiO2 nanocomposites. By changing the Ge QD size all wavelengths, from IR to UV can be absorbed. This is useful for Solar Cell applications. Figure 1 shows the concept of Ge quantum dots based solar cells. Fig. 1. The New Solar Cell Concept. Fig. 2. Micrographs of Ge Quantum dots in TiO2 matrix. Figures 2 shows the high resolution transmission electron micrographs showing the Ge quantum dots surrounded by TiO2 matrix. Preliminary photoconductivity experiments show a factor of 4 increase in photoconductivity upon exposure to white light. Fourier Transform of the lattice image to obtain diffraction pattern form the Ge nanodot. Compare with the diffraction pattern from Ge nanowires (b).

  2. Getting InvolvedS. Ismat Shah (PI) DMR-0441619 • One high school student, two undergraduate students, and one graduate student have been involved in nano-TiO2 research that includes research on Ge-TiO2 quantum dots nanocomposites.
