  1. Matthew 6:19-24 • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. They eye is the lamp of the body, if your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

  2. Matthew 6:19-24 • No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

  3. Treasures, Eyes, and Masters Matthew 6:19-24

  4. “You may lose your wife, you may lose your dog, your mother may hate you. None of those things matter. What matters is that you achieve success and become free. Then you can do whatever you like.” - Kevin O’Leary

  5. Where is our Loyalty? • Kevin O’Leary is very loyal to his money • If money is his god then he is a faithful servant to his god • How loyal are we to God? • Treasures, Eyes, and Masters

  6. Matthew 6:19-21 • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  7. The sin here is that a persons treasure is what they have and not the God who gave it to them • Do not store up treasures on earth • Why? Because you will lose them • Today we calculate wealth by savings, property, cars, bonds, and similar things • In the 1st century clothing was counted as assets

  8. There is no Guarantee • Everything we have here could be gone tomorrow • Theft • Fire • Tornado • Earthquake • Flood • Foreclosure • We try and beat it with safety deposit boxes

  9. There is no Guarantee • If our hope and meaning in life is founded on “items” then when we lose them our hope and meaning are lost with them • “ Store up your treasures in heaven” • Putting treasures in heaven means • Loving God • Loving spiritual things more than material things

  10. Matthew 19:21 • “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; • Treasure in heaven = giving to the poor • The value is in what your possessions can DO not the simple fact that you have them.

  11. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 • “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

  12. Being more like God (doing godly things) is how we lay up treasure in heaven and should be our treasure • When we TREASURE the spiritual over the material our priorities change from material to spiritual.

  13. Matthew 6:21 • For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. • Is your heart here this morning? • Is your heart in God’s work? • Is your heart in giving? • Is telling others about Jesus your treasure? • Our treasure has to be God

  14. Matthew 6:22-23 • The eye is the lamp of the body, if your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

  15. Your Eye must be “Good” • We must keep our eyes pure, but keeping to the context Jesus is talking about generosity • A “good eye” was a generous person • “He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor” – Proverbs 22:9

  16. Your Eye must be “Good” • “ Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?” - Matthew 20:15 • If your heart is closed up your eye is bad and your soul is filled with darkness(selfishness) • Treasure Eyes Masters

  17. Matthew 6:24 • No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

  18. Master = Lord • Leadership, ownership, high position, or authority • Jesus forces us to choose: Will we serve God or the pursuit of riches? Will we serve God or false idols?

  19. What gets you up in the morning? That’s your idol

  20. “You may lose your wife, you may lose your dog, your mother may hate you. None of those things matter. What matters is that you achieve success and become free. Then you can do whatever you like.” - Kevin O’Leary • What do you bow down to this morning? Money? Success? Your spouse? 401k? Pleasure? Food?

  21. What is a successful life? Do you have one?
