  2. Name of Tribes • Navajo- 8,000 b.c. • Apache-7,000 b.c. • Pueblo- Hopi, Rio Grande, Pueblo, and Zuni • Anasazi

  3. Clothing • The Southwest people dressed in clothes made from the hide of sheep or spun from wool. In hot weather, men wore loincloths. When it got colder, especially in northern part of the region, they added wool shirts, leggings, and moccasins.

  4. Environment( Physical geography and Climate) • Navajo- Grassland, mountains, and valleys • Apache- New Mexico, Arizona-Mountains, plains, desserts • Pueblo- New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Texas- Mountains, dessert, and plains. Climate- Cold at night

  5. Adaptations ( HEI) • The Native Americans subsisted on a wide variety of resources. One of their adaptations is agriculture. • Trans- Appalachian west is so varied, Indian economies differed dramatically according to local soils and climate. They also cleared a certain area in order to plant fields, and then later cultivated another stretch to allow the first tract to region its nutrients.

Beliefs/Religion • Believed gods helped with crops and harvests. • Priests are most important people in town. • Navajo said the mountains are where the gods lived. • Apache believed that everything in nature had powers. • Pueblo had “kiva” or special prayer rooms, and their religion was “Kachina”

  7. Housing • Some people lived in houses called hogans. The Navajo tribe in New Mexico and Arizona built hogans. Hogans have six sides built from wood poles and adobe(mud). There was one room in the Hogan and the doorway faced to the east. The hole in the roof was for the smoke from the fire to escape. • Also they use houses called Pueblo homes. Each home had a flat roof and built next to or on top of its neighbor. They are made of adobe too. Some families slept on rugs and animal skin.

  9. Transportation • Many people walked to get to places. There were no horses until colonists brought them over from Europe, so the Hopis used dogs pulling travois( a kind of drag sled) to help them carry heavy loads. Once Europeans brought horses to America, the Hopis could travel more quickly than before.
