Concept 1An Introduction to Health, Wellness, Fitness, and healthy lifestyles Introduction The objectives of the PED course are set with respect to the achievement of the World Health Organization goals and strategies: “Health for all” Reduction in the death rate is the first national (US) health goals (1979-1990)11 Healthy people (Health promotion and disease prevention) was the second national (US) health goals to be accomplished by 2000

Healthy people in healthy community’ goal for the first decade of the new millennium (2010) with focus on 2 central goals: a. quality of life, well–being, and functional capacity (wellness) b. eliminate health disparities as opppsed to reducing them • Objective: to aid people in adopting healthy lifestyles that will allow them to achieve lifetime health, fitness, and wellness

  3. 1. Health, Wellness A. Definitions • Health (mor than freedom from diseases) is the optimal well being that contributes to quality of life. Optimal health includes high-level mental, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical components “multidimensional” within the limits of one’s heredity and personal ability. (Fig 3, 4) tables 1,2 • * Wellness is the positive component of good health and a sense of well being. It reflects how one feels about life as well as one’s ability to function effectively. (fig 3,4) tables 1,2

The fact about Health and wellness • Health varies greatly with income, gender, age and ethnicity (fig 2) • Females, older people, minorities, and peple with low income have relatively low healthy days • Increasing the span of healthy life (fig 1) - life expectancy increased by 60% during the 20th century (76-77.4 years with 12-8 years of unhealthy years during the past decades - Women live longer than men • * Incurable illness such as diabetes can be managed with proper eating, physical activity

Health and wellness are individual in nature - Each of us has personal limitations and personal strengths - Focusing on strengths and learning to accommodate weakness are essential keys to optimal health and wellness • It is possible to posses wellness while being ill fig 7 • Health and wellness are integrated states of being fig 5

  6. 2. Physical fitness A. definitions • Physical fitness is the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively (resist hypokinetic disease or conditions) B. The facts • It’s related to, but different from, health and wellness. It consists of five health-related and six skill related fig 7,8 • The health-related component of fitness are : body composition, Muscular endurance, strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness (health and reduce hypok diseases)

The skill-related components of fitness are : Agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time and speed ( performance) • Metabolic fitness is nonperformance component of total fitness • Bone integrity is often considered to be nonperformance component of total fitness • The many components of PF are specific but are also interrelated

  8. 3. Healthy lifestyle A. Definitions • Lifestyles are patterns of behavior or ways and individual typically lives B. The facts • Lifestyles are affecting health, wellness, and physical fitness fig 9 • Lifestyles change • The alteration of Lifestyle has been shifted from infectious diseases to chronic life style-related conditions table 3,4 • Regular physical activity, sound nutrition , and stress management are considered to be priority healthy lifestyles

  9. Preventing chronic diseases and promoting fitness and wellness are the main targets for the new decade lifestyle 4. The HELP Philosophy (basis for making lifestyle change possible) • Health: one should be engaged in healthy behavior • Everyone: We should accept the fact that anyone can change a behavior or lifestyle « you are included • Lifetime: unhealthy lifestyles have cumulative negative effects • Personal: you assess your personal needs and make lifestyle changes based on those needs

Action • Determine area in which you may need changes to promote optimal H, W and F: the healthy lifestyle questionaire • Estimating your wellness will provide information for self-comparison • Lab 1A, estimate your wellness • Lab 1B, estimate your fitness • Get a better understanding of health –related and skill-related fitness
