She is very nervous. Her hands begin to sweat and she can feel her heart pounding. When the examiner asks Sophie to start the car, she feels sick. After the driving test, Sophie begins to feel her breathing slow down. • From the description above, identify two of Sophie’s bodily responses, stating whether each response is a result of the action of the sympathetic nervous system or the parasympathetic nervous system (2 marks)

Intro Activity: in groups • You have a set of cards which describe particular actions of the different organs of the human body • Your job as a group is, simply, to put the cards into two categories and give each category a description • No clues! Just come to a reasoned decision which you can justify!! • 5 MINUTES

  7. Which is which? • SYMPATHETIC: This branch of the autonomic nervous system produces physiological arousal and prepares the body for the ‘fight or flight’ response • PARASYMPATHETIC: This branch of the autonomic nervous system calms the body and conserves energy

PEER ASSESSMENT • 1 (c) (i) Outline the role of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system in physiological arousal (2 marks)  • [AO1 = 2] • AO1 One mark each for appropriate description of the role. • Possible answer: The sympathetic nervous system prepares our body for action during the fight-or-flight response (AO1, 1). The parasympathetic nervous system restores the body to its normal state (AO1, 1). • For part (c)(i) candidates who recognised the need to focus on the general roles of the two sections of the autonomic nervous system rather than specific bodily responses tended to score full marks.

  14. EXTENSION QUESTION: BILLY • Billy is an A level psychology student. He has been asked by his teacher to give a short presentation to the other psychology students in his class. Just before his presentation, Billy feels his mouth go dry and he starts to sweat. After the presentation has ended, Billy feels his breathing slow down and he begins to feel thirsty. Use your knowledge of the autonomic nervous system to explain Billy’s behaviour before and after the presentation.
