  1. MUSIC MAGAZINE THE EVALUATION BY JAMIE DUNGO MEDIA 12 A

  2. FORMS AND CONVENTIONS • My music magazine uses the same general layout as most other music magazines such as ‘THE SOURCE’. • My music magazine is not a lot different to ‘THE SOURCE’. However, I have developed their design structure to make mine seem more eye-catching, with a wider range of colour use and adding in a few 3-D objects and shapes to make it ‘jump off the page’.

  3. REPRESENTATIONAL ISSUES • My magazine represents a younger audience, in terms of particular social groups, because it is a Hip Hop music magazine. In general, Hip Hop music magazines attract the younger public, as this type of music is more appealing to them than other types of music genres such as Classical, Jazz and Mo-Town because of the lyrical content in which artists include in their music in which many young aspiring boys and girls can relate to. A lot of Hip Hop music is promoted through the mainstream. These days a large amount of the younger public are able to access music through the TV, downloading off of the internet and having the ability to play music on their iPods and Mobile phones.

  4. INSTITUTIONS • The types of institutions that would distribute my music magazine would most likely be shops like WH Smith, Corner shops, Music stores and possibly in clothing retail stores that sell clothes, relevant to how Hip Hop artists dress; e.g. Pharrell William’s BAPE brand as seen below. (Pharrell is in the middle)

  5. TARGET AUDIENCE • As stated before in the previous slide, (slide 2), the intended target audience would be those of a younger age; people in their teens and 20-30 year olds, and obviously those who love to listen to Hip Hop and its culture. Other targeted audiences could also be people who like to read books or magazines or just music magazines. Also, because of the heavy influential impact Hip Hop and other music genres have the target audience may be those of who the media and distributors may not expect. This is because of the dramatic change in music consumption through internet downloading and file sharing. Hip Hop has seen a growth in its global listeners as other genres have been fused together to create music which would appeal to a wider audience. An example of this would be Run DMC and Aerosmith collaborating, bringing two different styles of music together; Hip Hop and Rock.

  6. ADDRESSING THE READERSHIP • I attracted my audience by firstly taking a photo of someone who looked like a young Hip Hop artist for my front cover. This would benefit my intended target audience as a lot of the younger public, teens and people of 20-30, are most likely to be consistently involved with today's technology in their everyday lives. Same with the front cover and contents page, I tried to make everything feel vibrant and professional. Lots of images, colours, different shaped objects and sell-lines that you would expect the younger public to relate to e.g. Use of slang. For the double page spread, I again tried to make it seem professional, yet appealing, to the eye of a younger audience so that they stay interested in what they are looking at and what they are reading in to.

  7. TECHNICAL/CONSTRUCTION ISSUES • Constructing my magazine started off really well after previously having experience using PowerPoint 2007 with the preliminary task. I have learnt how to use different objects and change their appearance adding bevels, shadows, reflections, glows etc. I only used Photoshop a few times to crop out the background on certain images. However, PowerPoint 2007 deemed to be the most enjoyable software I've used to create a visual publication as it is very easy to get to grips with. Also, I used a Sony cyber-shot 7.2 megapixel camera which was fairly easy to use as I have always known how to function and use a camera to its full capabilities, in addition to having used it before.

  8. COMPARISONS BETWEEN PRELIM. AND MAIN TASK • Looking back to my school magazine, I have seen a great improvement in my PowerPoint publishing skills and have broaden my knowledge of new technology with the help of researching into how a music magazine is structured, looking at different types of photography that is used and many various conventions that the media as a whole have followed. The main task of creating a music magazine made objectives clearer and easier to understand from my point of view as I myself am a person with a huge appetite for music consumption in both past and present. Basing the whole layout of a magazine to one specific genre helped define what I needed to find out about what the public consumers want and expect to see in that allocated genre. Making a music magazine made me think about the roots of genres and the culture of the music itself. The main task involved a lot more and the undertaking at hand showed that there was a lot more to music than just words and instruments, it was the lifestyle, the passion and the gathering of all different cultures and beliefs that makes music what it is today.
