What is Parkinson's? • is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system • Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-generating cells in a region of the midbrain; the cause of this cell death is unknown. • More common in men and around age 50 or 60 • Symptoms: Trembling of hands, arms, legs, jaw and face, Stiffness of the arms, legs and trunk , Slowness of movement , Poor balance and coordination

Causes • some cases, however, can be attributed to known genetic factors. • PD traditionally has been considered a non-genetic disorder • around 15% of individuals with PD have a first-degree relative who has the disease. • 5% of people are now known to have forms of the disease that occur because of a mutation of one of several specific genes.

Medicine & Surgery • Levodopa • Dopamine • Brain surgery for PD is considered for individuals who experience disabling tremors, wearing off spells, and medication-induced dyskinesia. • Deep brain stimulation, is the most recent advance in this rapidly evolving field. • Surgery can be dramatically effective in some patients. In others, it may have only limited success

  5. physical therapy • cannot cure Parkinson's disease, • neurological damage cannot be reversed. • therapy can enable you to compensate for the changes brought about by the condition. • Can help with: Balance problems, Lack of coordination, Fatigue, Pain, Gait, Immobility, Weakness
