OBJECTIVE: SWBAT convert between units with different prefixes. Do Now: • A yard is a little less than a meter long (1 yard = 0.91m). Estimate the height of your table in yards and then convert that quantity in terms of m or km. • One inch is about 2.5cm long. Estimate the length of your pencil in centimeters. • Given there are 100cm in 1m. How many meters are there in 80 cm?
Agenda • Becoming familiar with metric units: What does a m, L, g look like? • Convert between units with different prefixes
English to Metric System What is something that is about: 1m long?
Basic Units • Distance: meters (m) • Mass: grams (g) • Volume: liters (L)
Mnemonic King -- Kilo Henry -- Hexa Died -- Deca Unexpectedly – Base unit Drinking -- deci Chocolate -- centi Milk – milli (micro)
SI Prefixes You move the decimal place when you are converting between units with different prefixes
Example • Convert 70mm into meters. • Identify the quantity measured. What is the base unit? • Is a millimeter smaller or bigger than a meter? • How much smaller/bigger is a mm compared to a m?
How to convert between units? • 1000mm in 1 meter • Conversion factor is 1000: 1000mm/m or 1m/1000mm • Would I divide or multiply the number by its conversion factor? • Moving LEFT (to larger units) DIVIDE by the conversion factor. • Moving RIGHT (to smaller units) MULTIPLY by the conversion factor. 0 0 0
0 0 0 mm are smaller than m, so 70mm will be a fraction of a meter! 1000mm in 1 m! 70mm ÷(1000mm/m) = 0.07m
Group work • Convert 22L into mL. • Is a L smaller or bigger than a mL? • How much smaller/bigger is a L compared to a mL? What is the conversion factor?
Worksheet: Metrics and Prefixes • Directions: For each group of values listed below, write the items in order from largest to smallest. Then state whether the values represent distance, mass, or volume.
Exit Slip Directions: Close your binder/notebook and clear your table. Answer the questions on a sheet of paper. This activity is to be completed independently. Questions: • Convert 54kg to grams (g). • Convert 458cm to meters (m).
