  1. NYS Regents Physical Setting / Physics Exam

  2. It’s a challenging assessment! Based on past results, we can expect that: • Approximately one of every five students taking the Physical Setting/Physics exam will fail. • Less than 25% of all students will score at mastery levels (85% or higher).

  3. Start preparing NOW! • Become familiar with the exam: • Learn the structure of the exam. • Learn what content is on the exam. • Become familiar with the style of test questions on the exam. (PRACTICE)

  4. Exam Structure: • Part A – Multiple choice. Usually 35 questions, or 41% of the exam. • Part B1 – Multiple choice. Usually 12 – 15 questions, or about 14 – 18% of the exam. • Part B2 – Some multiple choice, mostly constructed-response questions. Usually accounts for 15 – 20% of the exam • Part C – Extended/constructed response. Usually 20 credits, or 24% of the exam.

  5. EveryQuestionisImportant! • Total number of points possible (Raw Score):85 • Multiple choice question points:50 • That’s as much as60%of the raw score! • Treat Multiple choice questions like word problems (they usually are), and take thetime to solve them properly.

  6. General Exam Content : • Mechanics • Energy • Electricity/Magnetism • Waves/Light • Modern Physics ~ 35% ~ 12% ~ 23% ~ 21% ~ 9%

  7. Sub Topic Outline • Mechanics: - Vectors - Linear Motion (and Free Fall) - Projectile Motion - Laws of Motion and Force (Friction/Inclined lanes/Gravitation) - Centripetal Force/Circular Motion - Momentum and Impulse

  8. Sub Topic Outline • Energy: - Work and Power - Kinetic & Potential Energy (Including Springs & Pendulums) - Work Energy Theorem - Law of Conservation of Energy

  9. Sub Topic Outline • Electricity and Magnetism: -Electrostatics and Electric Fields - Electricity (DC circuit diagrams, Ohm’s Law, Electrical Power, Series and Parallel Circuits) - Magnetism and Electromagnetic Induction

  10. Sub Topic Outline • Waves and Light: - Wave Characteristics (wave speed) - Wave Phenomena (Interference, Resonance, Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction, Doppler Effect) • Electromagnetic Spectrum/Visible Light

  11. Sub Topic Outline • Modern Physics: - Standard Model - Energy-Mass Equivalence - Wave Particle Duality (Photon Energy, Energy Level Diagrams, Scattering)

  12. Tips for Success! 1. Start preparing for the exam NOW! - Practice, and really become comfortable with the reference tables! - Seek assistance as you review! 2. Get lots of rest the night before! - Bring only what you’re supposed to! - Every Question is important, answer them all! - Check your Answers!
