  1. Tenure and Mentoring Workshop Ronald Stringer Educational and Counselling Psychology MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  2. History • Hired to McGill in 2000-1 • Applied for tenure in 2005 • Took medical leave, received permission to reapply in 2006 • Applied for tenure in 2006 • Dispute with UTC, presentation May, 2007 • Resolution with Provost, June, 2007 • Tenure granted July, 2007 MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  3. What do I have to add to this process? • Most applicants (the large majority) will have no interaction with the system beyond the preparation and submission of their dossiers. All will go swimmingly. • So, my experience was different. • Moreover, because I took part in an entirely new process, some of my experience was unique. • I will discuss the different and unique aspects of my experience. MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  4. Out-of-the-ordinary aspects of my experience… • Had to present personally to UTC - this is not something that most of you will do. • Because the UTC had to make specific evaluations and concerns regarding my dossier, I had an opportunity to directly address their concerns MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  5. Unique aspects of myexperience • I broke the system… • Took medical leave after having started my application for tenure. This has, apparently, not been done before and their was no system to deal with this. • So, I applied twice, and the two sets of documentation got out of synch. My UTC was working with inconsistent documents. • Recommendation: don’t get sick, the system is not up to it. MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  6. Unique aspects of myexperience • I was the first faculty member to utilise the new tenure dispute resolution system • This system allows for a direct appeal to the Principal when tenure is denied. • In this case, the Principal appointed a designate, the Provost, to handle the situation. MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  7. Unique aspects of myexperience • The new process involved a direct presentation to the Provost. This allowed me to present specific and clear arguments regarding the UTC’s comments on my dossier. • And then, a meeting with the Provost, the chair of the UTC, and myself. This ensured that all parties had an opportunity to make themselves understood, and that appropritate process was being followed. MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  8. Unique aspects of myexperience • The process met my needs - the Provost overruled the UTC and recommended tenure be granted. • A lengthy and unpleasant appeal process was avoided, so the process also met the University’s needs. • The Provost handled the situation professionally and fairly, reducing my own personal stress. 9. Issues Raised • Personal Difficulties • Was a primary caregiver for mother-in-law during the final three years of her life • This had an effect on my work, culiminated in my own medical leave • How to take this into account? • No mechanism for this. MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  10. Issues Raised • Teaching evaluation • Much more than student evaluations • I teach only small, graduate level classes - evaluation numbers are meaningless • Look for other indicators and metrics, for instance, student outcomes MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  11. Issues Raised • Research Productivity • How much is enough? • Faculty of Ed. covers many disparate disciplines - sociology, psychology, etc. • There are metrics available - Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (http://chronicle.com/stats/productivity/) • You can find a reasonable comparison group - then it’s objective, not subjective. MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  12. Resources • MAUT - provided faculty advisor (Gowri), legal advisor (Joseph), invaluable support • Faculty Mentors - provided advice and support • Bibliometric resources, FSPI • TLS - provided excellent advice on how to deal with teaching portfolio (Cynthia & Susan) • Departmental support (Alenoush & Susanne) • Colleagues - provided general emotional and professional support MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008

  13. Advice • Don’t Panic! • Use MAUT resources • Develop your own resources • Understand the situation • Try not to take it personally • Treat this like any other intellectual problem - look for clear ways to answer criticisms, objective measures • Maintain your own professionalism MAUT Tenure & Mentoring Workshop 6 March 2008
