  3. SETTING EXPECTATIONS • WHY you are going abroad? • Motivations • What are you excited about? Nervous about? • Observe vs. Judge • Not Tisch in Prague • Not always better or worse • Flexible – you will be surprised - open to changes!

  4. CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT • Emotional highs and lows • Mood swings, excessive complaining, homesickness… • Stress • How to prepare for culture shock? • Research culture! • Keep in touch w/family & friends, journal • Contact site staff or NYC staff! • Special note about drinking

  6. PROGRAM DATES • Check-In to Housing (request and pay if earlier) • Saturday, May 19th • Classes Begin • Sun. May 20th • Last Day of Program • Mon. June 25th • Check-Out • Tues. June 36th This is a good time to travel!

  7. HEALTH Medications/Prescriptions Keep up medications and Dr. Visits Bring some over the counter medicines with you? STAYING HEALTHY: Travel Sleep Prepare before you leave – keep up counseling Wellness – homesickness or difficulties adjusting Unmanageable stress, isolation, inability to sleep, significant change in appetite and/or weight, persistent irritability or tearfulness Forms Immunization (non-NYU)

  8. HEALTH INSURANCE Insurance MUST maintain domestic coverage Supplemental International Health Insurance:  NYU purchases HTH Worldwide for you HTH Worldwide – for length of program ONLY! Student international coverage at no cost to you Make appt. with HTH ! Save your receipts – may have to pay up front! TAKE YOUR CARD WITH YOU REGISTER & print card-receive email via NYU Health Ctr.

  9. TIPS Register with the U.S. State Dept. Keep a low “American Profile” – don’t be a target Street Smarts: be conscientious! ESPECIALLY nightlife, dating, money/ATMs, traveling, passport and personal belongings (CSI insurance) DRINKING – decision making, unfamiliar country WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY Know your emergency numbers Report to Director and Police NYU files a report with Public Safety SAFETY • #1 TIP: • TAKE RESPONSIBILITY • FOR YOURSELF

  10. TRAVEL Permission from Director NYU Traveler – register any travel! ACADEMICS #1 -Only on weekends with no class obligations HOUSING – noise and respect NYU/TISCH STUDENT POLICIES ARE ALL APPLICABLE TO YOU Any violation can result in your expulsion from the program POLICIES

ALCOHOL & DRUGS Zero tolerance drug use, Zero tolerance alcohol abuse Similar to U.S. - disturbing the peace, lewd behavior, littering, driving under the influence, drinking on the street/public transportation can be criminal activities by local authorities LOCAL LAWS AND BEHAVIOR U.S. citizenship does not make you exempt from full prosecution under another country’s criminal justice system Examples – Dept. store shopping Violations considered minor in US can have harsh penalties Conviction of a crime Can be more years of imprisonment in a foreign jail Doesn’t matter if you’re underage either; you can still be charged as an adult POLICIES (continued)

PACKING & TIPS • CONSULT A TRAVEL GUIDE • READ BLOG EVALUATIONS • SUGGESTIONS • Medicines/Prescriptions • Light, comfortable clothing and shoes • Contact solution, planner, watch, alarm clock (battery operated) • Linens and towels optional (provided) • Adapters – only cameras/computers will work • BRING LAPTOP AND DIGITAL CAMERA!!!! • UNDERPACK NOW FOR RETURN HOME
