Madriz, NicaraguaCreative Empowerment: Youth Leadership and ArtDates: June 30 – August 13 • Partner Agency: • Plan International • Work Area: • Northern Nicaragua; cooler temperate climate; very basic living conditions in rural areas; summer = rainy season • Culture: • Family oriented lifestyle; rice, beans, fruits and veggies!; complicated history with the U.S. but very welcoming to U.S. visitors!

Matagalpa, NicaraguaCommunity Health and Women’s Rights (subject to change)Dates: June 11 – July 24 • Partner Agencies: • FundacionMujer y DesarrolloEconomicoComunitario • Colectivo de Mujeres de Matagalpa • Work Area: • North central Nicaragua; cooler, temperate climate; very basic living conditions in rural areas; summer = rainy season • Culture: • Family oriented lifestyle; rice, beans, fruits and veggies!; complicated history with the U.S. but very welcoming to U.S. visitors!

Oaxaca, MexicoCommunity Health and Cultural AppreciationDates: June 18 – August 14 • Partner Agencies: • Puente a la SaludComunitaria, Servicios de Salud de Oaxaca (SSO), Centro de Apoyo al Movimiento Popular (CAMPO), ProyectoTrilingue • Work Area: • State of Oaxaca in Southwestern Mexico; diverse indigenous population with several languages; promotion of amaranth grain, preservation of indigenous languages, and sustainable development • Culture: • Mix of Mexican and Indigenous cultures, languages and food.

Barranquilla, ColombiaCulture and Development in Colombia’s Caribbean Region 8 or 10 weeks : June 7 - August 2 (or August 16), 2013 • Partner Agency: • Universidad del Norte de Colombia (UniNorte), FundacionProboquilla, Fundacion Buena Mar, Luriza • Work Area: • Northwestern Colombia; coastal Caribbean area; homestay placements will be urban to semi-urban • College Credit: • 3 college credit hours from UniNorte; 42 classroom hours • Volunteers will participate in two week classroom module before participating in field work experience with non profit development agencies • Special Considerations: • Only for participants currently enrolled in college; no incoming freshman • In-country training only; chapter training does not apply • Option of 8 or 10 week experience; different pricing depending on option

Cotopaxi, EcuadorYouth Leaders in Action – Citizenship, Gender, and Rights Dates: June 25 – August 16 • Partner Agency: • Plan International & Grupo Social FEPP • Work Area: • Andean region, hot in the sun and cold at night. High elevations. • Culture: • Mostly indigenous communitieswhich are highly organized, value work ethic, and are more formal and reserved than mestizo communities. With patience and respect they will treat you as family. Special Requirements: For this project Volunteers are required to have backpacking experience prior to summer travel. Applicants interested in indigenous culture and indigenous communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

  7. Cañar/Azuay, EcuadorYouth Leadership and Children’s rightsDates: June 18 – August 7 • Partner Agency: • Plan International • Work Area: • Southern Ecuador, Andean region. Communities are a mix of mestizo and indigenous communities, milder climate than Cotopaxi. • Culture: • The Cañari people are a pre-incan population and have a strong history of resistance. Volunteers will either be placed in mestizo or indigenous communities.

Peru, TBDDates: June 11 – August 7 • Project Theme: • To be determined • Partner Agency: • Plan International and Ayuda en Accion • Work Area: • Regional Director is currently visiting the regions of Piura, Cajamarca, and San Martin to determine the best area and regional office to host an AMIGOS Volunteer project.

Perez Zeledon, Costa RicaNational Parks and Environmental ConservationDates: June 18 – August 13 • Partner Agency: • Casa de la Juventud • Work Area: • Host communities are in the southern Brunca region of Costa Rica. AMIGOS Volunteers will spend alternate weeks in partnership with local youth in three separate national parks! • Culture: • Volunteers are generally in mestizo communities, Ticos are famous for their caffe con leche, gallo pinto (rice and beans), and their Pura Vida approach to life.   10. Coclé, PanamáEnvironmental and Public HealthDates: June 30 – August 12 • Partner Agencies: • Ministries of Health and Environment, Panamá Verde • Work Area: • Central Panama; hot, wet climate. Very green and lots of rain • Culture: • Family oriented lifestyle; rice, lentils, chicken, tropical fruits, and sancocho (regional chicken soup); lots of soccer and baseball

  11. Chiriquí, PanamáEnvironmental Health (Subject to ChangeDates: June 25– August 7 ) • Partner Agency: • Ministry of the Environment, Peace Corps • Work Area: • Central Panama; hot, wet climate. Very green and lots of rain • Culture: • Family oriented lifestyle; rice, lentils, chicken, tropical fruits, and sancocho (regional chicken soup); many indigenous Panamanians live in this region

San Juan, Dominican RepublicYouth Leaders in Action, Children’s RightsDates: June 11 – August 6 • Partner Agency: • Plan International • Work Area: • Southwestern DR; varied climate (hot and dry to cool and rainy); extends from Hatian border to the southern beach • Culture: • Active and outgoing; people love music and dancing; baseball is very popular here; lots of beans and rice; spaghetti and boiled plantains

Paraguarí, ParaguayEnvironmental HealthDates: June 18– August 8 • Partner Agency: • Ministry of Health (SENASA) • Work area: • Southern Paraguay roughly an hour and a half southwest of the country’s capital, Asunción. Paraguarí is made up of fertile forested lowlands, with hills in the northeastern area, and the Tebicuary River along the southern border. • Culture: • Diet consists mostly of beef and yucca,
