Challenges Facing Environmental Risk Research Majority of environmental causes of disease that we research today are associated with small to moderate risks (~10 to 50 percent increase in chances of getting cancer) - Indoor air radon risk ~ 30% increase Environmental exposures typically are small and/or low dose

    4. Challenges (cont.) Environmental exposures will typically be to a mixture of plausible hazards (smoking) Involuntary and ubiquitous nature of environmental exposures makes it difficult to quantify the exposure (determine exact dose) Ethics prevent doing clinical trial type studies
