  2. Mahout • Mahout is a person who drives an elephant. The word mahout comes from the word mahaut and maharat meaning “one having great measure” a mahout usually starts out as a boy and assigned an elephant early in its life. The tool to control the elephant is a called a goud which is a sharp hook to control the elephant. Sanskrit has 3 languages. Neghawaan who use love to control their elephant, Tuktimaan who use ingenuity to outsmart them, and Balwaan who use cruelty and strength. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahout

  4. Brahmin • Brahmins are priests, scholars, educators, and preachers in Hinduism. They enjoyed lots of power in the medieval times. They do not appear in the Indian Census and is not officially recognized. Caste politics in modern India treat Brahmins as a forward caste.(means they were treated with high respect) Brahmins study the Vedas(large body of texts), worshipping the Deity(immoral being that is holy) www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahmin

  6. Malcolm Bosse • When he was a young boy he crushed his foot, so he couldn’t do athletics, so he started to write. He was a practitioner of an ancient Chinese form of exercise. He published more than 22 books. He was a Yale graduate, with a masters, and a PhD, who was a Fulbright scholar. The very first book he wrote wasn’t able to be published. His novels are usually set in Asia, and have been praised for their cultural, and historical information. Malcolm was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1926, and died in New York City in 2002.

  8. No!!!!! • As they embarked onto their journey they had a caravan accident. Couple of dacoits attacked their caravan and murdered Uncle and kidnapped Gauri. Days passed looking for for his sister. He was wondering what his dad was going to say. Then he went to a town and saw a bum. Arjun was hungry and tired. The bum took him to this shack and gave him this dish that had a spice that made you drowsy. As he fell asleep the bum sold him to the army.

  9. Where Am I? • When he woke up he saw this man. He didn’t know where he was. As he took a few steps forward, and the man took off his sacred red thread. The man said he was a soldier and not a Brahmin anymore. They said he had to learn to use a sword and act like a soldier. He had to choose to be a Khadga, Chakra, or a Mahout. He asked “What does a Mahout do?”, they responded “A soldier who is on a elephant, and goes into war.” Arjun had chosen to be a Mahout, and trained to be one.

  10. Main Characters • Arjun: the boy who was a Brahmin, and has become a trained Mahout. Brave, kind, and a natural leader. • Gauri: Arjun’s sister who was kidnapped. Can’t speak, gentle, and shy • Rama: Strict and stern. His mahout trainer from the 1st camp. • Hari: his mahout trainer from the 2nd camp. Strict, and stern. • Karna: his friend he met a the 2nd camp. Outgoing, and adventurous.

  11. Setting • This book takes place in India in the 1500s. When he got kidnapped they sold him to the army and he stayed at the camp for about 1-2 years. Then he got sent to another camp, and trained there. (is where he met Rama)

  12. Theme • Slavery, war, and human trafficking. Slavery: is when he got sold into the army, and becomes a slave. War: is when he becomes a mahout and trains to go to war. Human Trafficking: is when people sell people or trade them. Arjun gets sold and traded multiple times.
