Secondary Sources • Second-hand account, taken from someone or something else • Usually describing, summarizing, analyzing, evaluating, derived from, or based on primary source materials Examples ? • Journal, Magazine & Newspaper Articles • Books • Textbooks • Encyclopedias • Reviews (Movies, Art, Theatre, etc.)

  11. Secondary Sources on the Web • Trade associations and government web sites for industry trends, statistics, census data, analysis & links • Use an Internet search engine to find these materials. For a list of web tools go to: http://library.mcmaster .ca/find/web-search

  12. Search Tip #1Use quotes “” to find phrases • Will retrieve materials with words in the exact order specified Examples: “charitable organization” “marketing strategy”

  13. Search Tip #2Use synonyms or alternate search words for key concepts Charity • Non-profit, Not-for-profit, etc. Funds • Fundraising, Money, Donations, Gifts, Contributions, etc. Marketing • Advertising, Promotion, Selling, etc.

Search Tip #3Use a wildcard symbol to retrieve plurals and alternate endings • an asterisk * is the most common wildcard symbol • fund* will retrieve fund funds funding fundraising fundamental • wildcards expand your search, useful when you have too few results; can also retrieve unwanted words

  15. Search Tip #4Combine search words using AND and OR • AND = all of these words narrows search, useful when you have too many results e.g., charities and fundraising • OR = any of these words broadens search, useful when you have toofew results e.g., marketing or promotion or selling

  16. Putting all the Search Tips Together (charit* or“non-profit organization*”)and(fund* or gift* or money or donation* or contribution*) and (market* or promot*or sell*) NOTE: Use parentheses ( ) when using AND and OR in a single search statement
